Does anyone go through anxiety when you are in big crowds of people? I always kept to myself a lot even when I was in school. But as I got older anxiety around crowds of people I got tense. And I never could relax. Now i have to take medication to make me more relaxed around others. I hate being this way and wish It would go away. But it don't work like that. Any ideas in what to do?

1. savypat (7887) | 8 months ago | I don't feel comfortable in crowds either. Can you start by going into small groups of people? I always try to go very early or very late to anywhere I might encounter a large crowd. Sometimes this doesn't work and then I have to go home and try again another day but sometimes there is no choice and I just have to do the crowd thing. I just make myself consintrate on breathing that takes my mind off the crowd.

strawberrybaby39 (622) | 8 months ago | I have gone in small crowds and big crowds. Its never easy either way you go. If it gets to bad on me my anxiety gets the best of me and i have to take a pill to get me to relax more. Then I can keep going and get my breathing under control. But if I don't take something I feel my breathing gets out of control and I get dizzy.

2. Jaytech (645) | 8 months ago | I've struggled with this my entire life, it's a form of agoraphobia & social phobia. Back in my school days when it was break time I would hang by myself in a corner away from the crowds & found it difficult to mix with people. Even simple every day activities such as shopping would become a problem for me through life.
As & grew up I found it difficult socializing as I felt unwell, sometimes it would lead to full on panic attacks. It's made making friends, holding down jobs & even dating a real nightmare. I've also found out that it makes me appear as weird or strange to others & I end up getting shunned or looked down upon, it's a very lonely illness.
I try to focus on interests to take my mind off these issues, it does help to a degree, but it is always lurking in the back ground. But you're doing the right thing talking about it, you realize that at least others share your fears & worries & you're not alone.

strawberrybaby39 (622) | 8 months ago | I stayed to myself a lot when I was in school. I even had a hard time going through the lunch line without my sister by my side. I felt up tight and uneasy. I have some friends but not many. It would be my husbands friends. My husbands mom had to help me get through some of this when it got bad on me. I felt like I was falling apart one day and I was out of all of my medicine at that. And know one new it. But I didn't have the money at that time to pay for my medicine. So his mom found out and called my doctor and got my medicines called in and got me back on track again. But still nothing is ever easy dealing with anxiety.

3. miamilady (2498) | 7 months ago | My son has problems with anxiety. There are programs for people with anxiety disorders. He went through a program. It helped a lot, but he still struggles with it a bit. You should look into going through a program.
I don't think I've ever experienced an anxiety attack myself, but I've seen what the anxiety does to my son and I know that it's really a difficult thing to experience and to overcome. I hope you are able to get some help.
Take care.

4. pinklemonade (366) | 7 months ago | Yes I am experiencing rather big problems with it at present. I actually have social anxiety but it is definatly made worse in crowds. All throughout school I was too scared to put my hand up in class, when I was put at the front of the hall in my GCSE's I couldn't concentrate on the exam because I felt like everyone was looking at me. It is certainly alot more in control of my life than I would like it to be. I am going to Download festival in a few days which around 100,000 people will be going to. And even worse - drunk people. I normally avoid these situations as much as I can. I don't like walking by pubs at all in case someone drunk comes out as I find these people very intimidating. I'm not sure whether medication would be beneficial to me but I am certainly looking for a solution. I hope you find something that works for you

strawberrybaby39 (622) | 7 months ago | I use to do the same thing when I was in school I couldn't raise my hand in the class room. I froze up. Much less go through the line to get my lunch. I felt like all eyes were on me all the time. I guess it also depends if someone makes me made to then I am not so quiet. I force myself to go to family get togethers I just take my medicine and try to go with the flow. It can be hard on people with anxiety.

5. muscles4me (9190) | 7 months ago | I am wondoring what you consider a crowd? More than 20? Or are you talking about a really big crowd like a large baseball stadium full of people. I do not like to go anywhere that is crowded as too many people around make me uncomfortable. That is why I choose to go someplace either very early in the morning or later at night. I guess you could go to crowded places where you can leave very soon would help as practice. I mean like going to a library right after school is out. It is crowded there, so just sit down for awhile and people watch.

strawberrybaby39 (622) | 7 months ago | A crowd to me is 15 to 20 people all around. I like going to the library. But I haven't been there in a while. But i make sure I take someone with me so I am not so under pressure. I don't like the uncomfortable feeling. If i feel people are staring at me.

muscles4me (9190) | 7 months ago | I know exactly what you mean. I do not like to be around people. If I atke my mom to the eye doctor I usually leave and just go walk around in a dollar store avoding people because the waiting room is SO CROWDED and you are like sitting shoulder to shoulder which I really hate. I need alot of personal space.

strawberrybaby39 (622) | 5 months ago | I feel the same way you do. I have always thought people were looking at me and judging me all the time. I am on 3 medications but know it never fully goes away. That is why we always have to go to counseling. I have went to counselors that didn't help me at all so I had to keep looking for another counselor.
