I believe that you should start a blog to respond to articles, not a discussion as such.

Nevertheless, I would just like to say a few things. Without reading the article, I'm sure we're all aware of the general gist - pollution damages our environment. These articles seek to outline specific pointers that may be personally relevant to all of us. Perhaps they have been sponsored by green NGOs to ameliorate pollution levels. While it sounds morally right and beneficial for our planet and species to make these changes, the massive issues of economics and politics come into play. Although we have the resources to do so, it would mean investing billions of dollars into something that will not help increase profitability or efficiency, but just cleanliness and health. Politics is driven by this, and so there are two bad sides of a coin - either condemning your nation to a budget deficit to address these promises or ignore it and risk backlash from the media who condemn the leader in turn. Until we abolish the use of monetary units, I'm afraid our hands are tied - yes, we can make some changes but not enough to effectively halt, let alone reverse, our damage to the environment.
