Political censorship - a Democratic Party subversion  

Aggressive discussion? I'm only pointing out that myLot has banned the use of the D-I-C-K because they believe that it will cause offense, yet as you have shown you can use words like hooker with impunity.
It seems a very juvenile, puerile, facile and arbitrary choice by myLot over which words they ban. If anyone called me a D-I-C-K, I wouldn't be offended - I'd just wonder how old they were?

Strangely, Mr Cheney (not my personal favourite, Lon Cheney Jr) does seem to be appearing on US tv more since Obama got elected than he did when in the government. Mind you, here in Britain we've just made our version of Donald Trump, Sir Alan Sugar, a peer of the realm and member of the government, even though he has never won any election. Democracy is wonderful.

That probably explains the smile on his face. I wouldn't mind not being able to use the d word, but I don't want people thinking I'm discussing Lon or Lon Jr! Are they related, do you know? I like old horror films and it isn't a common surname.

Bush can also be an insult and a sexual reference, as can wiener and plonker, and smack, horse, mary can all be drug references, but are all permitted. It seems a moronic state of affairs when such a word is blocked. I perfectly accept that certain words should be blocked, ie F***, C**T etc, but this is really too far.
Of course it's not political censorship, have you never heard of sensationalism and irony?
Strangely, I have posted a request for information on commonly held beliefs which has received 2 responses, yet this tongue in cheek comment has a lot more responses. It just shows that people respond to sensationalism and never really pay attention to the tone of what they are reading.

Some time back I tried to post a response about a very tasty chicken part but but had to change it to chicken chest!! To me that is the ultimate in stupid censorship!

That same thing was my very first experience with the myLot censors! I was telling someone a good way to prepared chicken and the first time I just used the "B" word and it wouldn't work; then I figured as long as I put "chicken" before it, it would be OK...NOT!! I changed it to "white meat" and it worked find. Go figure!

There must be an actual person whose job is to decide which words are included in the filter, and, if I were a clinical psychologist, I would think there could be a thesis in studying this person through the words he/she allows and those that are blocked.
My students (well actually, not all of them, but the occassioal one) have called me far worse names tha D1CK. That chicken brea5t5 are banned is even more surprising, as that is a legitimite word, in common normal usage. They even use it on tv advertising for supermarkets!
As a lecturer vaguely associated with the Faculty of English, I find this form of arbitrary censorship off legitimite English/American frightening. It does seem a little Orwellian!

I'm with you, sweetie, the mylot word filter is just there to make mylot a positive expereince for all members. I run a yahoo int=erest group and we go with the saying nothing posted that would offend somebody's grandma.

Would your grandma really be offended by the word D**K? What about Lon Cheney & Lon Cheney Jr - Mr D Cheney is not the only Cheney, first names give clarity.
Amazingly, you have either no sense of humour or have never encountered irony. Some people just can't differentiate between 'tongue-in-cheek' and reality.
I'm perfectly chilled, but as my rating has gone down from 8 to 7, it seems that the respondents to this posting are taking life far too seriously.

Adrenochrome I agree with you. It sometimes amazed me that myLot users take every word literally. Perhaps it takes a certain level of intelligence that some users seem to be lacking to "get" tongue in cheek or facetious comments.

The strange thing is that if you use terms like Republican or Democrat, some Americans have a Pavlovian reaction and immediately assume the worse. I know that you and I will never agree on politics, but I have always respected your right to express your view and argue your point, and you have shown me the same respect, whiteheather. If only more users could take the effort to take a breath, reread a posting and actually think about their responses. All the best.

True, I could use Richard, although having watched news broadcasts from the USA, I've never seen him referred to as Richard Cheney. This implies that children and grandmothers across America are constantly offended, because he and the American media put his name up on screen prominantly whenever he appears or is discussed. Having such an offensive term branded across the breakfast news whilst young children are watching and eating must be shocking for them - or perhaps mylots filter is just ridiculous. I can discuss hookers, hoes and tarts, but not use a commonplace name (because of a childish use of the term).

I don't know about automatic - I suspect there is a very strange person, locked in a little office deciding what language they will allow. If not, I can be hired for just a small stipend.

You could try applying for the job but I think that they will stick with their cheap automated scripts

I'm English, so not very creative. Critical, arrogant, condascending and patronising - Definitely, but creative - No.:)
