Can someone explain the point of TAGs to me?

Wouldn't using more than a couple narrow your discussion or responses down too much and limit the amount of viewers who find it? I have no idea but when I see my discussions I've started I see tags under it that I didn't even list, whats up with that? I think it would be much better if you didn't use them but it benefits someone, but who's keeping track?
