Any idea who started the fastfood chain craze?

I haven'e a clue who actually started them but I bet it was someone who had their own restaurant and someone they knew wanted to start one the same and there was the idea that someone could make money by setting them, I wonder if Mcdonalds was the first...although I think I remember a restaurant here in Australia called Red Barn but it was called McDonalds Red Barn, they had the best Hot Dogs with a similar sauce as McDonalds has in their burgers...they were yummy.
