Living Rizal in modern times  

His handsome profile makes the peso coin more handsome. In every province, town and there's a street, park or commercial establishment named after him.At the Luneta, his monument is visited by Sunday strollers, tourists, visiting VIP's and diplomats, with honor guard standing vigil. The monument in the park is replicated down to the last detail in china, and similar tributes of smaller size are marked by street names, markers and plaques in Japan, Hong Kong, France and Germany

And yet, the sad truth is that in provinces many of the less prominent monuments to Dr. Jose Rizal, our national hero, are in a sorry state and badly in need of restoration. Their plaster is peeling off, the plants that surround them died seasons ago, the lights that are supposed to keep the symbolic flame burning have been stolen or destroyed, coatings of moss accumulated over the years speak volumes about a weakness of community spirit which may largely be due lack of funding.
