Slot machines and changes in life  email this discussion to a friend?

Are any of you old enough to remember the slot machines where you used to have to pull the handle and when you won, actual money would fall down into the tray? Those were the good old days, as they say. Not that I gambled much before but it used to be much more fun to actually pull the handle rather than just push a button as they do these days. It used to be a thrill to be able to scoop up a handful of nickels or quarters and have a cup full of change wherever you went in the casino. Today things are so much different and I miss the old ways. That is also true for many things I used to enjoy in the past, such as dimestores, 5 and 10 they used to be called. I guess I am such a nostalgic and sentimental old girl that it really makes me sad that so much of what used to be has changed so much over the years. Some things have changed for the better but some things that used to be can never be again, and that is really hard for me to accept.

I agree. I loved the sound of quarters coming down into that metal pan. The clink clink was a wonderful sound I miss it a lot. There are a few things I miss like a place in Denver called Scotty's. They had killer cinamin cokes. As a kid we would go there after a trip to the zoo. I also miss the Organ Grinder Restaurant in Denver. It had a HUGE pipe organ and someone would play it while we enjoyed our pizza. There are a lot of great things that have been sacrificed due to advancement of technology and the changing of times.

Yeah, it is kind of sad to see those old things change. I did enjoy those clink clink sounds too. Cinamin cokes sure sound good. I know there are lots of things relating to food, beverages, candy, etc. that have changed too and are no longer available. It's too bad. All we have left is our memory and may be some pictures along the way.

I heard just today that Dollarama is raising its prices to start at $1.25... don't know if they'll change their name to Dollarandaquarterama...

Gosh, what isn't going up these days? I think Dollarandaquaterama would be a very appropriate name for it in such a case. It is too bad we can't turn back the hands of time and have the pricing on items that we did 50 years ago.

Five and ten cent chocolate bars, seven cent ice cream cones, penny candy, 85ยข an hour minimum wage...
uh, maybe not.

I was around when slot machines were like that, but I wasn't old enough to gamble! But my parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles all complain about the new slot machines! The last casino I went to you could pull the handle, or you could push the button if you wanted to. I chose to pull the handle. But still, they didn't take coins. I still think the slot machines are a lot of fun, but I guess that has a lot to do with the fact that I never used the old slot machines.

Yes, I agree, they are still a lot of fun, especially when you win! You missed out on some great treats by not being able to pull those handles and see and hear those coins coming out of the machines. I even remember, before I was of age to play the machines, when they used to spit out silver dollars. Now that was a real treat, one that I will never forget.

um..barely.i saw a few in a vegas airport in 1991.
don't know if they still have them.they probably figured patrons wouldn't want to take the time to cash in vouchers between flights.

i remember the old cigarette machines with the pull levers though.
and the dinette mini-jukeboxes at the tables.

I remember going to Vegas with my parents to the Mint and now the Freemont. I loved the slot machines back then. I recently went to Vegas and was disgusted by the switch to "coinless" slot machines. I loved playing on the slots and listening to the coins hit the tray! Or listening to others "hit" It was so exciting. I also enjoyed putting the coins into the slot machine, dropping coins on the floors because of my haste in putting a coin or two into the slot. I am really disappointed in the change to coinless slot machines now. I don't even bother playing them. I was watching Show Girls and Elizabeth Berkley, was playing on a coin slot machine, and I almost began to cry because those machines are no longer there! It is also hard for me to watch "Casino" I think there should be some casinos that should still carry the coin slot machines for those of us who enjoy them over the coinless slots. Why is it as time goes on, things tend to get worse instead of better/ :(

I feel exactly the way you do. Why do some things have to change for the worse. I used to love to find coins on the floor of coins left in the trays. It was like finding gold. The "thrill is gone" so to speak. It is very sad that things have to change and that great old fashioned stuff is no longer there to enjoy.
