A friend of my mothers for more than 10 years called my mom stupid over an email

Oh I am so mad right now I could spit nails! My mother had forwarded an email she got that says "at 5 minutes and 6 seconds after 4 A.M. on the 8th of July the time and date this year will be 4:05:06 07-08-09 and this will not happen again until the year 3009" Then sarcastically it says " I just had a deep feeling you needed to know this, aren't you glad you're on my mail list?" Ok so it's a simple kind email meant to be funny and it made me laugh a bit and I responded with "It reminds me of July 7th, 2007 at 7:07 LOL" Mothers supposed best friend responded with this "Oh thrilling! So stupid-- a sequential numbering like that can be done with every year, forever. It doesn't take brilliancy to figure that out, And if you want it to be the exact same numbers, it doesn't take a genius to know that you have to go 100 years apart for it to end in 09 again. Man, emails like this one below proves how ignorant people are that forward this kind of useless garbage around. Public Service??? God, you really are stupid!!! I could definately live without you!!!" I joke you not my mouth dropped wide open and I just sat here looking at my screen for like 3 minutes so confused. This person has been my mothers "best friend" for over 10 years I just couldn't believe it! What really made me so mad though was that not only did she say that stuff but when she sent it, she hit the " reply all " button so her rude remarks about my mother went to every single person that my mother originally sent that email to. I was so mad, embarrassed, confused had so many emotions all at the same time I didn't know what to do. So after sitting here looking at my screen for about 3 minutes I hit reply all and this is what I said... " Dear _____, If you don't want to be my mothers friend anymore that is fine, but you don't need to call her stupid just because she forwarded an email thinking it might make you laugh as it did so many others people. My mother and I may not get along well but I do not appreciate you responding to EVERYONE SHE SENT THE EMAIL TO and calling her stupid!! That was wrong, rude, and very inconsiderate, and yes I am sending this to EVERYONE because I want to apologize to everyone else for YOUR RUDENESS! I am sorry that you all had to witness my mother being called stupid by someone who is supposed to be her best friend. I mean can you believe that? It would have been different if she had just responded to my mother but she sent her belittling smut to everyone. Most of the people that read that are family members my uncles, my older brother, a few cousins, and even a couple of people my mother has known from work for years. I'm so embarrassed that these people had to witness this and I feel sad for my mother because the one friend she had to confide in just completely hurt her. Do you think I was right in my response? What would you do in this situation?
