What is a disaster or emergency happened tomorrow? Are you prepared? Could you look in your kitchen right now, and say that there is enough food put back, to last you for the next week? If not, then you need to refigure your grocery list. The American Red Cross says that we should have up to three days of food!
I say, you need up to a week of food. One reason being, you just never know how long it is going to be,
that you won't be able to buy groceries from the store;
or have electricity;
or how many days it will be until FEMA arrives on the scene
or if you will get the emergency food that is offered
or if the emergency food .. will get offered
Red Cross can sometimes take days to get set up on a site
FEMA can take days to get set up
Salvation Army takes days to get to some areas
What do you do in the mean time, if you are not prepared in advance? This is something to think about.

I think that we have enough food to survive on for a week, and we have candles, plenty of books for entertainment, and games as well. We've gone three days without electricity here and while we did go out to eat, we were just fine. If we couldn't leave the house for a few days we would still be fine on snacking. If it was just the electricity and only in our area we could go down the road to give our food to my fiance's grandparents just in case we needed it to be kept cold, etc.

Keep in mind, that going out to eat, sometimes is not an option during an emergency or disaster. Always be prepared.

Very true indeed, restaurants can be closed down for many reasons. Even grocery stores, but hopefully the general store wouldn't be... We have that right up the road.

Hello Shirley. I have never thought about this until I have just read your new discussion. It is a good practice for us to always prepare enough food and grocery in our house in case something unexpected should happen. Well, I usually have some food and snacks at home for a couple of days, but not that long for a week except the rice I always have in the kitchen. So I think that my rice will help me a lot to get through emergencies and disasters. Of course, I don't wish it to happen anyhow. Take care, friend.

Rice would be good, provided you have the instant kind. But if you have not gas, no electricity, then what? A charcoal grill or gas grill is good for emergencies, and .. pots can be used on the grill when necessary.
I am sure that none of us wish for such an emergency or disaster to happen, but the point is, they do happen. I was in a hurricane two times, in less than three years apart. Also, i was in an area, that i thought, would not be affected by such things..boy, was i ever wrong.
