Are weddings should have a theme?

Well to answer your questions : I don't think that all weddings should have a theme, or rather I should say, I think that the couple should choose for themselves if they want to go traditional, spice the traditional up, or just have a different theme altogether. I think that it's semi different from a motif. I think a motif is similar to a scheme, a color or seasoned scheme that brings the decorations, the bridesmaid's dresses, groomsmen's tuxes altogether. To me, what it means when talking about a wedding theme is like : Western (mine and my fiance's theme), Oriental, Beach, etc.

I guess theme has a big differnce between motif. in my own understanding, wedding theme is something like, for an instance, a beach wedding or a garden wedding and so on..
So if it is a beach wedding, then the arrangement should be like hawaian or something.. And of course the motif comes after, your entourage should wear something like summer dresses but it has to be illegent so it will still look presentable since it is a wedding and it has to be formal.

I don't think that all weddings should have a theme but for me, it's a sacred and the most intimate part of your life so, why not have one if you can afford it and it's fun and also you'll only walk down the aisle with your husband-to-be once so why not make your wedding dream a reality and make it a very special one....

a motif is like lilac and green colors, for decorations and dresses -etc.

a theme is like ( a few things i have seen): sailors (nautical weddings), beach themes, asian themes, etc.

Motifs can be subtle things such as the colors, or flowers, or just little hints of a theme.

I kind of think that all weddings, where there are attendants and more than just a couple of guests/witnesses and a ceremony with a reception to follow, have some kind of theme. For starters, at those kinds of weddings, the bride (or the couple, but usually the bride) chooses colors that she wants to coordinate everything from the attendants clothes to the decorations, even the invitations follow that color selection. All of the brides' maids' bouquets usually match with the same kinds of flowers and those flowers are almost always carried over to the reception hall, be they centerpieces on the tables or just decorations around the room.

A "theme" doesn't have to be as blatant as "The 60's" or "Luau" but just a common thread that runs through the whole event, a thread like the attendants clothing colors or the flowers.

I am an event planner. When i offer my clients wedding themes i normally start off with looking at the couple first. for example: Last year I did a wedding for a couple whom had been married before and this was there second time around. They were really in love and kept saying that they were two hear whom found finally found each other. so we made that our them. " two heart becoming one" the groom was a DJ in his youth and so we had CD's made of the couple favorit love songs. Each guest recived a cd. the invitation had heart, the cake was heart shaped, everything focused off "two heart becoming one"

Hi there jlamela thanks for this nice post, I am from India, we have traditional wedding as hindu, as per our culture we fix up and perform wedding, wedding feast in places called 'Nantap', they are well decorated have their theme and motifs.
