any tips on getting other pets adjusted to new kitten?

i got a new kitten about 2 weeks ago and now they seem to all be getting a long (my lab/boxer is about 7 years old and my other cat is 11 years old) but even though i have been really trying to give each pet attention and their "own special time" with me i feel i still could have made the transition a little smoother somehow.. it took about a half a week before the kitten could even go near my cat without my cat hissing and making horrible faces at it.. the dog loves her but she is scared of her size lol.. what do you do to ease a new pet into the family? do you just make sure they all have special time apart or just force them all together 24/7 or what?
