Does anyone else here suffer from Social Anxiety Disorder? Unfortunately I do. If I had to 'rate' it, I'd say mine is more or less at best moderate bordering on severe. Even though I was nineteen when I first found out that there was actually a disorder and it was called Social Anxiety Disorder, I believe it started developing or kicking in when I was fourteen years old.

Unfortunately it has negatively affected my life and continues to do so. At the moment, I really need a job (I actually should have had one well before now) at the moment and unfortunately every time I start trying to apply, I start getting really anxious about the whole thing. I don't think it's necessarily the 'working' part that makes me anxious (because I really want a job as well). It's just getting there is the biggest anxiety inducer I think.

Is anyone else out there in MyLot land who also suffers from it?

Hey did you do that thing I sent you the link too? I'm not sure if you have even read your comments but there's this survey that gives you an idea of how much you have it. I was shocked to find out according to the survey I have "very severe" social phobia. I guess I always knew I had it but not that bad.

myLot reputation of 92/100. pinklemonade (366)   ranked 295 out of 670 in anxiety  7 months ago

I know you already know that I have it but I thought I would answer anyway!: )

why do you never reply to what I say: (

myLot reputation of 88/100. DarthJustice (1360)   ranked 271 out of 670 in anxiety  7 months ago

Because I was going to just mention it when I write you back on Facebook and I usually don't reply to comments in my discussions:P. But since I'm here, tbh, I'm not sure what link you're talking about. I don't remember getting a link to anything unless you sent it to me a while back or something. Either way, can you give it to me again?

hey, don't worry about it: ) I will send you the link on Facebook!

hi
hey i too suffer from social anxiety but i don't to what extent, may i have the link too, pinklemonade?
i usually stammer in public speaking and that doesn't feel alright, i want to do better than that.
thank you...

myLot reputation of 92/100. pinklemonade (366)   ranked 295 out of 670 in anxiety  7 months ago

I don't get the stammering but I don't tend to ever speak in public at all. I find when I don't want to talk to someone like a shop assistant I end up talking really quiet, do you get anything like that too?

myLot reputation of 99/100. voldrox (1539)   ranked 627 out of 670 in anxiety  7 months ago

i get really serious, i mean i don't smile or show emotions... just a straight plane face and finish the businessninja

myLot reputation of 92/100. pinklemonade (366)   ranked 295 out of 670 in anxiety  7 months ago

I try not to show emotions when I am speaking to someone too, I don't like them knowing what I am feeling when I havn't said so. It's kind of like putting words in my mouth I feel. That happens to me quite alot though. I quite often am really quiet for like 2 hours and then someone will come up to me and say I look miserable and what's wrong. If only I could answer that question and people would understand!

Im to the point where sometimes, if I get into a crowded enough place (only if its crowded with people) I begin to have a bit of a panic attack. I don't go out unless I have to. I'm not at all comfortable in group settings that are more than three people and will tend to do whatever I can to remove myself from that situation, even if it means sitting back and just watching everyone else from afar. Typically I wont speak in a group either.. If I need something to be said, I say it to a confidante who then speaks for me.

I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder when I was a teenager, though I was always fairly convinced that I should've been more specifically diagnosed with Social Anxiety Disorder. It has gotten better for me over time, but it used to impact my life pretty badly. Once the panic attacks set in during my freshman year of college, that was probably the worst point. I, too, used to have major annxiety about applying for jobs and especially going through with interviews. Heck, I still don't like job interviews, but I know I have to go through them. I remember being placed in some sort of cognitive behavioral therapy when I was first diagnosed with anxiety and depression, and having to go there made my anxiety even worse. People wonder if there is any "getting over it," and I don't think there is, at least not 100%. I still have anxieties, but I've had to come up with some of my own methods for dealing with them.

myLot reputation of 92/100. pinklemonade (366)   ranked 295 out of 670 in anxiety  7 months ago

I went to CBT aswell and it only made me worse aswell. I found every week I was dreading going to the group and in the end I stopped going because it was causing me so much anxiety, like I couldn't write when they told me to because my hand was shaking. I think my social anxiety is the worst it has been at the moment. A few weeks ago I think I experienced my first anxiety attack, at least it was similar to what has been described as one anyway. I am going to try and make my way in life anxiety free as possible. I know that's no way to solve the problem but it helps me feel calmer now at least!

I have it so bad. I cant even go to a restaurant for long before i start freaking out. My husband got mad one time because he wanted to go to hooters, and we went, and before we even got in the door i started throwing up in the parking lot. I was trying to hide i was panicy from him, but it ended up making me sick. Now i just try to take a deep breathe everytime it happens, and i keep something in my purse at all times to get my mind off of it when it starts.

myLot reputation of 92/100. pinklemonade (366)   ranked 295 out of 670 in anxiety  6 months ago

I would love to know what kind of thing you keep to help you. I am having quite a bit of trouble with doing most things at the moment, and you know those times where you just can't get out of stuff? Well those times I need something! Like tomorrow, I have this dinner to go to and I am so frigging scared!!

I normally take a little puzzle book with me, or i also keep a small cross stitching pattern with the sewing needle and some thread in my purse. Anything you can find thats really cheap, maybe at a dollar store, something that you can fit in your purse to take with you when you start getting anxious. You can find small cross stitching patterns at an arts and crafts store. Theres normally about 4 bucks, and cross stitching is really easy. I learned how to cross stitch all by myself. They have directions inside the package in case youre not sure.

myLot reputation of 92/100. pinklemonade (366)   ranked 295 out of 670 in anxiety  6 months ago

I actually have done cross stitching since I was young, maybe it would be a good idea to get into it again! I carry a puzzle book around with me too, it helps on the bus but not when I am having an anxiety attack. I am yet to find something that helps with that but great idea on the cross stitch!

You aren't alone in this. I've been trying to deal with S.A.D for as long as I can remember.

They tried to tell me at one point that I was agoraphobic but it's not that I'm afraid to leave my house; I'd just rather not.

I find that I work well in smaller groups if I have at least one other person there with me that I know and I can trust. I have a couple of really great friends who do their best to understand and support me. If I have to go into a situation that I know is going to hard I just drag one of them with me.

I've also been working with my doctor to come up with something that works. I'm not much into the daily pills because I find those just keep on too even of a keel. I just need something to take when I know that I'm going to be put in a situation that raises my anxiety. So far Ativan is working wonders for that. It definatly helps me to get out there.

I've also recently started attending a church and doing litte volunteering around town just to try to get myself out and about even though I know it's pushing it.
