Alcoholics Anonymous...and addictions... |
| |
| A close family member of mine has started a road to recovery. He has been sober four and a half months now and went to a rehab and is now in a halfway house. Now two weeks ago he learned of another way to stay sober and it is called Rational Recovery where one does not have to attend meetings but more or less just change their way of thinking. (from what I gathered anyway) I checked out the website and it seems like it would work. I am just wondering how many people also think the RR way could work. That one can maintain sobriety without going to AA meetings? I will post the link here if anyone is interested in checking it out before answering. This site also says their technique will work with other addictions as well such as gambling smoking or drugs. This person in my life has not stopped going to meetings but has simply started using the RR way with AA. I am looking forward to any and all feedback. Positive and negative. Thanks! http://rational.org/index.php | | Alcoholics Anyomous | | | | |

| | Phew Thank you for respondinglearn2earn! I was beginning to think that this would up in the no responses LOL! You have a great response here the most important thing is that he did realize he has had enough. And it all begins with a high level of desire. I like that. | | | |

| | I quitted smoking a year and a half ago after smoking for 50 years. My motivation was big: I couldn´t afford them anymore. I tried to smoke less but it didn´t work. I know I´ll be an addict all my life and I know I can´t afford to give a single puff. I hope all of you are helping him. It´s hard. One get´s crancky, depressed, agresive. Please don´t call it "vice" in front of him. It is not. It´s an illness that society gave us. Do you remember those wonderful cowboys who smoked? Do you remember the movies with Humprey Bogart drinking away his pains? I am not an alcoholic (although I am a social drinker)but cigarrettes are the same. And we need tender loving care from our family and friends. I don´t think it helps anyone to learn about cirrotic livers. But it does help if you tell him he looks sexier (or nicer, or whatever) now that you can see his beautiful eyes clear. I don´t know if I made my point; I´m talking form my experience as a smoker. My daughters and friends helped a lot. | | | | | | |

| | That is good advice! I haven't even mentioned the fact to him that he looks so much better now! I will have to tell him. And congrats on your quitting smoking. That is something I need to do also. Did you just stop cold turkey? I am beginning to not afford them myself. And yes an addiction is an addiction no matter what it is you use or do. Thanks marguicha! | | | |

| | Addiction is a terrible thing and it doesn't matter if it's an addiction to drugs or alcohol or cigarettes, it still controls your life. I am happy to note that someone has found a way to beat it. Cheers!! | | | | | | |

| | I've been an alcoholic for over 20 years, that's over half my life!to be honest it WAS fun in the beginning...parties,bars,picnics&family get togethers. But somewhere it all went to h#@% and there was no 'hand basket,so to speak!I,ve ended up at my breaking point in my life where it is don't drink or die...I'm refering to the night my husband and I fought a battle I wouldn't wish on anyone, sober or intoxicated. Now my husband is in jail because of my malicious statement to police and now that I'm trying to explain what really happened & no one, meaning D.V advocates or the D.A. My only hope is basically turning myself in ,to prove what alcohol does to impair your judgement on just about anything you do and who you hurt intentionally or not! Now my husband is in jail and I'm here regretting ever touching a drink or drug, EVER...I love my husband more than life itself ,but obviously not before my vodka...and now I feel I've ruined not only my life but his too:(People who are alcoholics are selfish, its a "leave me alone, there's nothing wrong with me disease!"we, or I'll speak for myself,I don't hurt anyone else at home drinking...that's just because no one wants to be around me when I drink!my poor husband walked into the storm and is reaping what i've sewn, and thats not a very nice feeling. | | | | | | |

| | ive been clean and sober 12 years and it wasnt easy and dont let anyone tell you it is, BUT i believe you can do it, if not for someone you love do it for yourself. its a great feeling waking up in the morning clear eye'd and not puking on my shoes, let alone looking thru the wrong side of the jail bars. | | | |
