If you have enough power, will you place a ban on smoking in your country? | | Smoking is harmful to both the smoker and the surrounding people. Nearly everyone agree. But still many people smoke and some of them become addicted to smoking. I don't hate somkers, I hate the tobacco companies. Now many countries have placed bans on cigarette advertising. But many tobacco companies still advertise their logo on TV, Post, etc. I think such a ban is no use. If I have enough power, I'd like to place a ban on smoking, I will weed out all kinds of tobacco companies. If there's no tobacco in the world, it will be better. The most lousy saying is that "look, how much taxes we(tobacco companies)have paid to our country". Do you hate the tobacco companies, and will you ban on smoking if you have enough power?

There will always be some way of accessing cigarettes from the streets and likely would cost double what someone pays now for a pack. While we can blame peer pressure and the tabacco industry for deaths caused from cigarette smoking the truth of the matter is that all of those smokers had a choice to smoke or not to smoke. Unfortunately for some people they didn't have much choice to be subjected to second hand smoke such as a child living in a home with smoking parents. But then the child who got struck and killed by a drunk driver didn't have a choice either. Nor did the person whose car was run over by a semi whose driver fell asleep because he didn't have enough rest the night before. Unfortunately people die everyday based on other people's bad decisions, smoking being one of them. But if we were to have control over everyone's behavior then we would no longer be the land of the free...And unfortunately where there is a good there is always a bad. I don't hate smokers, I once was one, who scared to death after an episode of bronchitis decided to quit and has been smoke free for two years.

getitok (121) | 5 months ago | We should not hate the smokers, but we can say we hate tobacco companies, especially hate a tobacco company's advertisement. A man/woman have the right to choose to smoke or not, it seems we'd better not to challenge this right, but I think it is possible to challenge the selling right, if we prohibit a company or a person to sell tobacco, then we have the opportunity to ban smoking without a challenge to human right

| | | | 13. thegreatdebater (1024) | 5 months ago | I wouldn't. I am not a smoker, but I am married to one, and it isn't the best thing for me or my kids, but I still wouldn't ask her to quit. I think smoking is like drinking, both are bad for your health, both can kill you, and both can hurt those around you. But, when was the last time someone said we should ban Beer? There are alot worse things in this world that you could do.

getitok (121) | 5 months ago | You'd like to say yes to your wife for smoking, this is a good evedence that you really wouldn't vote for a ban on smoking. In the social contexts surrounding me, it's not so easy to accept a smoking woman as a family member.

| | | | 15. harishkowshik (224) | 5 months ago | hi getitok..If I have the power that first thing I will do is keep the smokers away from the non smokers as they tend to develop passive smoking which is again adding fuel to the fire. this could be done with the help of separate smoking zones. Besides this strict condition on tobacco companies and increased taxes can do the job of reducing smokers.

Though I hate the tobacco companies, I think I will not ban on smoking if I have enough power. Because I think smoke is also a right to some people, especially to those who enjoy smoking a lot and think smoking could make them more clear-headed. Maybe just let them to smoke in allowed place is enough.

| | | | 18. devref (138) | 5 months ago | here we go another person trying to tell others what they should do as regards smoking.well am sorry i have been a smoker for over 40yrs all my family have smoked their whole lives and not one of us have had so called smokers diseases.i for one am still very active and run around every weekend refereing at least two games of football(not to be confused with the american version)why even today in the close season i am out to do a tournament from 9am - 6pm so i am probably the exception to the rule.at the end of the day its down to individual choice and the last thing any of us need is someone moaning about the pros and cons of smoking there are far worse things going on in the world that need sorting than a persons RIGHT to choose if they smoke or not

getitok (121) | 5 months ago | Good luck for you. Have a healthy body after smoking for over 40 years. It's hard if not impossible to persuade you to support ban on smoking. Suppose somebody (ex. me) put all the tobacco companies go to bankrupt, you will suffer for months because lack of cigarettes, but still you might get the benifits of being a nonsmoker for the rest of your life.

Banning smoking makes it the forbidden fruit, and some just have to pick that fruit. I suppose you know that tobacco has some medicinal value? http://www.jointogether.org/news/headlines/inthenews/2007/medical-uses-of-nicotine.html

getitok (121) | 5 months ago | Thanks for your information that tobacco has some medicinal value. You might know, opium is also used in medicines, but nearly all countries have ban on opium smoking and opium trade. We should give people the medicine in a form that doesn't kill them.

| | | | 20. mdvarghese (993) | 5 months ago | I dont hate the tobacco companies. But the people those who are in power have the responsibility to ban smoking and sale of tobaco products, as smoking is very dangerous to the smokers and the passerby. It is dangerous than the pollution. So my opinion is first to impose ban of the farming of tobacco. Here the farmers will be under loss. But the government should keep some fund in their budget to help the farmers to help them to change their agriculure crops. This process will be very easy because, most of the countries facing a shortage in the production of food grains. The farmers can switch over to some farming other than the tobacco.
Next step the tobacco companies can switch over to some other production like food processing, garments, pharmaceuticals and so on. In such situation, people will be forced to quit smoking or consumption of tobacco as there will not supply. Simultaneously, the governments should educate the people about the evil effects of smoking.
Here nobody is losing the employment and government is not losing the taxes. Finally we will be a healthy society.
Let me thank you for started such a good subject for discussion and expecting many more from you
