Are newspapers a thing of the past?

I was doing a discussion about where we get all our news and someone mentioned the newspaper. It made me think when the last time was that I even read one! I haven't read a national or state one in years I guess! With the internet it seems all at my fingertips! I do read a small local paper occasionally... What do you think, are newspapers soon to be a thing of the past?

Hi, macdingolinger. I think the newspapers are still in common use and are not going to be eliminated in the near future. There are mainly two reasons for that. - Still, a large part of the world does not have access to other resources of news. - Newspapers provide localized news also (i.e.) news for that very city or village a person lives in. Other media forms don`t provide this localization. That`s why people still need newspapers.

You are correct. We tend to forget that there is not the access to intrnet or other sources in every place in the world! Where I am even the internet access is limited.

I get most of my news from the tv new. some comes from the internet and sometimes i buy a local newspaper and get it was there. i think we will still have the newspapers but some of them will probably go out of business because of lack of sales.

Yeah, I figure the sales of most newspapers have dropped drastically since the interet and even television are so prominent, and inexpensive! If the news is available from other sources, I am not likely to purchase another means which is only telling me the same thing at an added expense!

I think most people still like the newspaper, I don't get them mainly because I have to cut back on many things at the moment and the newspaper was one of them...but it is nice being able to sit down and read the daily news...

Yeah, I always liked it when I subscribed to the paper and could sit and peruse through the news while sipping my morning coffee! I don't subscribe any more either. I did use them a lot in the classroom when I taught school though!

Hey! Yep, it seems more are moving to getting the news online rather than the "old-fashioned" way! I did use papers when I taught school they were very handy for both English/writing and math!

I still read newspaper. We are provided free newspaper daily in the staff room. I get my daily dosage there (except for weekend of course) I also buy Sunday Times. Sometimes I might miss it since it sold out fast. I love the Wonderword it provided inside. Also the Sunday paper has special issue.

Here the Sunday paper usually contains coupons!! That's great, but I don't usually buy one for myself! I do read the samll local paper as it is provided by some business for the facility where I stay. I like to read the fun stuff but don't take too much stock in the news!

The newspapers are very much present here in India. Even though newspapers are available on internet, people like to read them. I myself subsribed to the newspaper and they deliver everyday in the morning at my doorstep.

I do enjoy reading a newspaper when i get a chance. There is something about sitting and taking your time, sipping a cup of java and reading through the paper!
