The Choctaw Indian Fair is held annually the second week in July in Philadelphia, Mississippi, which is north of Meridian, Mississippi on highway 19.

For centuries, the Mississippi Choctaws have gathered at the ripening of the first corn. This gathering was called "The New Corn Ceremony" or "Green Crn Festival". The present day Choctaw Indian Fair has its roots in this ancient celebration. The fair has long been a time for Choctaws to gather and pay homage to their traditions and heritage but it has also emerged as an opportunity for the tribe to welcome visitors to the reservation and share their ways of life. Choctaw ancestors have left behind a rich legacy that includes: Basketry, clothing, drumming, hunting, legends, quilting, striking sticks, beadwork, foods, language, pottery, and stickball. The first Choctaw Indian Fair was held in 1949, which means they will be having their 60th anniversary this year. However, they didn't have the first princess pageant until 1955, in which Patsy Sam (Buffington) became the first official princess. The pageant is held on Wednesday Night. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday Nights, they will have a country music concert. I don't know who's going to appear which night but Marty Stuart and Connie Smith are going to be there one night. Marty Stuart is originally from Philadelphia, Mississippi, btw. Also, Clay Walker is going to be there one night and I don't remember who's going to be there the next night. The fair starts on July the 8th and goes through the 11th.
I got to go to the fair in 1999 when they had their 50th anniversary. They have different tribes of Indians to come from all over the united states to sell their crafts, t-shirts, do their dances, demonstrate their Indian flutes, do other demonstrations, sell foods, etc. You get a chance to try Indian fry bread, which I think is good. It's especially good with confectioners' sugar on it. I got a chance to dance with the Indians, as a matter of fact, lollol. They had this one dance where the men could pick a woman out of the audience they wanted to dance with and I got picked. I don't dance but it was a lot of fun! I also went to the princess pageant the first night I got there. That was the first princess pageant I had ever been to and I really enjoyed that. I also went to a stickball game one night. That as very interesting to watch. It's very simple to play but it's very dangerous! One guy got hurt! They also have rides at this fair, such as the tilt-a-whirl, ferris wheel, zipper, scrambler, swings, and I can't remember what all. They didn't have a roller coaster, though, and I thought that was kind of strange. I love roller coaster rides!w00t This ferris wheel was kind of unusual because it had bucket seats, if you know what I mean. It could seat four people, two across from each other. I enjoyed riding it.
As for the concerts they had during this time, some of you know that I got to see Billy Ray Cyrus one nightwub. The next night, Lorrie Morgan was there and I went to see her. I came home the next day because I had tickets to see Billy Ray again on Saturday Night down in Oakman, Alabama, which is 15 miles south of where I live.
The country music concerts didn't start until the '60s when they had acts like Chet Atkins, Lester Flatt, Merle Travis, etc. They started having paid acts in the '70s. I can't remember who all they had then but Jerry Reed is one that I remember. Kathy.

Oh wow I can not tell you how many times I have been to this. We had a cabin there for many years as I was growing up. In addition I have performed there, was a highsteeper for Hinds.. This post brings back many memories of good food, good friends and lots of fun, staying up late discussing hot topics and talking with friends you only see once a year.

Hi meandmy3! Were you there in 1999? I thought if you were, I could have seen you and didn't know who you were. I didn't know that I would end up communicating with you on mylot someday, lollol.
I forgot to mention in my discussion that they had an alligator wrestler there one day when I was there and I got to watch him. I know this is not everybody's cup of tea but I thought it would be interesting to watch him. He was from the Seminole tribe in Florida. He told jokes and kept us laughing the whole time. I feel like he did this to entertain us as well as keep his courage up. He said he got his thumb bitten off by an alligator one timeshockedninja!Have you been there since they built the casino? It's called "The Silver Star Resort & Casino". That's where I stayed while I was there. It's a beautiful hotel. I plan to do a discussion on it one of these days. I hear they've added on to it since I was there.
I started to go again in 2000 but I had car trouble when I got outside Tuscaloosa, Alabama and I ended up having to go home! I was so disappointed! I wasn't going to spend the night this time. I was just going to go for a day and then come back home. You see, I live in Jasper, Alabama and that's about 230 miles from Philadelphia. Kathy.

Wow that would have been a road trip for one day.

I have not been in many years as I moved to Chicago in 1998, so I was not able to make it in 99, I may just have to plan on seeing if my friends still have a cabin next year and taking the kids.

It is truly an experience and something that everyone should get to participate in

Now I have lived there and I dont remeber this happening couldbe that I was there the wrong time of the year.
But I have also been on the rez. to a friends house.
Wishe I had know about this as I was living there in the 70s.
and would have loved to have goneam sure the friend would have told us if we were there at the time seems like we moved there sometime in Sept tho.
My hubby helped build the HIgh lines around there that year.

How long did you live there? It looks like you would have still heard something about it even though you moved there in September. It must not have been very well advertised at the time because I didn't know anything about it until the early to mid 1980s. I had a bookstore from 1984 to 1986 and a customer came in one day and just happened to mention it while she was in there. She and her family had just gotten back from the fair a few days before. She said that they went every year. I told her that I had never heard of it and that I would like to go and she told me I could go with them next time they went. I didn't see her any more after that. I had to go out of business in 1986 because we didn't do any good. Anyway, I had always wanted to go since she told me about it and I finally got that chance in 1999.

I guess you know they have a casino there now, don't you? That was where I stayed while I was there. It's called the "Silver Star Resort & Casino". It was the closest hotel to the fairgrounds and naturally, I wanted to stay at the closest one. It's a big place and very nice! I plan to do a discussion on it one of these days. It wasn't all that expensive, either, believe it or not. At least I didn't think so. I had seen ads on it before I even went. I hear they've added on to it since I was there. Kathy.

I think that would be interesting, especially since that is where my tribal heritage lies. It is very diluted, but I have cards showing that I am a member. We have the Mid America All Indian Center in Wichita, and I know that a little further south, in Oklahoma, there are lots of pow wows and things. It could be good to visit sometime.

Yes, I like to go to powwows, myself. They usually have them on Blackwater Creek here in Jasper about once a year. Kathy.
