What is a golf handicap?

I have often wondered how you get a golf handicap.
How is it calculated??
I love watching golf but don't understand it when people say my golfing handicap is such and such.

Hi applepod,
Golf handicap is only for amateur and this is how people grade your golfing skills. It is like which level your are. There lower your handicap no mean you have more skill.
