When they decided to teach Science and Maths in English some 6 years back, what was the contention for doing so? Was it to improve the mastery of English?or Was it so that students who go on to foreign universities later wouldn't find it tough to relearn all the scientific terminology? If it was the first reason, I would think their move was kinda silly. Teaching Science and Maths in English will hardly improve your english. Better to get english teachers who actually teach the right thing and who can make english more interesting for the students. Better for schools to make it mandatory for reading one english book per week as homework and for presentations and plays to be created from some books. THere are so many other ways.... If it was the second reason, the conversion back to Malay now says what? Typical case of finding it hard to do and taking the easy way out. Does it really affect me as a mother of kids who will be going to school? No....maybe because I did it in Malay anyway but that didn't stop me from reading other English science books and learning from them. So, what are your thoughts? Especially as a Malaysian who may be sending your kids to national school? How will it affect those kids already in school and have already started learning in english?
