Is it safe to travel to Mexico?

I planned to go to Mexico for a week vacation, and my desired destination will be cancun with a great package I found online. From the television, and online newspapers, not only the swine flu intimidate the tourists, but also the crime rate significantly increased, due to the drug war against those cartel organizations. Many gun fighting and shooting were around. Do you think it is safe to travel Mexico within this year? Or Should I postpone it until everything peace down.
