In my discussion about the Choctaw Indian Fair, I mentioned that I stayed at the Silver Star Resort & Casino while I was there. This is a very nice hotel on the Pearl River Reservation in Philadelphia, Mississippi. It has about 500 rooms, including more than 75 suites. The 90,000 square-foot casino houses 3,000 slot machines. I don't gamble, myself, but I had to walk through the casino several times during my stay there to get to certain parts of the hotel. The lights are just beautiful, though. They also have seven restaurants, five retail shops where you can buy a souveneir or a gift for someone, a pool where I went swimming everyday. If you want to exercise, they have an indoor fitness facility and you can pamper yourself at the spa. During the fair, they have a shuttle bus that leaves the casino about every hour or half hour, taking people to the fair. The first day of the fair, I drove my SUV to the fairgrounds. I got lost coming back to the casino that night, lollol. I decided from the next day on that it would be easier just to ride the shuttle bus everyday. I even got to ride with some of Billy Ray Cyrus's Slydog band members, which was a lot of fun! Billy Ray was going to be in concert at the fair that night and his keyboard player and bass player rode with us! It was fun talking to them! Getting back to the casino, they have valets to park your car for you and bellhops to carry your luggage to your room and back to your car when you get ready to go home. They also have a convention center where they host entertainment every so often. For example, Bill Engvall is going to be there Saturday, July the 18th at 8:00. The Oak Ridge Boys are going to be there Friday, August the 7th, at 8:00. Kenny Rogers is going to be there Saturday, August the 29th, at 8:00, and The O'Jays are going to be there Saturday, September the 12th, at 8:00. Oh yes, Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers are going to be there Saturday, September the 26th, at 8:00. If you would like to go to any of these concerts, you can call the box office at: 1-866-44PEARL for ticket and concert information.
There is also a golf course nearby called the "Dancing Rabbit Golf Course". I thought this was a cute name.
Since I have been there, they have built another casino & on the Pearl river Reservation called the "Golden Moon". I don't know very much about this one.
They have also built a water theme park since I have been there called "Geyser Falls". It sounds like the Mississippi Band Of Choctaw Indians are doing very well. Kathy.

I am glad that you had a lovely stay. It sounds like a huge hotel. I prefer small and friendly locally owned guest house. I haven't ever been to a casino. One day I would love to see the Mississippi River.

Hey maximax8! Yes, it is a huge place. I guess I like both, myself. I know the economy is bad but maybe someday you will get to see the Mississippi River. I hope so, anyway. Kathy.

It has been said many times "The white man took the money and land from the Indians with much fighting and blood shed. Now we give it all back, smiling all the way at the Casinos". It sounds like a fun place to visit, even though I do not gamble. I could sure enjoy the pool and spa and other entertainment. I like bright lights as well.

Hey antiquelady! I wish I could afford to go again. It's about 238 miles from here. I started to go back in 2000 but I had car trouble when I got outside of Tuscaloosa and ended up having to go back homeangry! I was so disappointed! I wasn't going to spend the night this time, though. I was just going to go for a day and come back home.

I'm glad to know that the Indians are doing well, myself.

Yes, you have to go through Tuscaloosa to get there from where I live. I'm sure you've heard of Tuscaloosa, haven't you? It's home to the University Of Alabama and the Alabama Football Team. I just thought you might have since you seem to keep up with college football so much. I'm sure you remember Bear Bryant, don't you? He was the head coach there for many years. Kathy.

myLot reputation of 96/100. ANTIQUELADY (16514)  3 years ago

But just know I wont ever get back there again.
It all aounds so nice,
Here I see new casinos go up all the time really think it is silly for them to build more as they cant fill the rooms up right not think it said this morning its down 20% and thats really alot.
BUt we go to the strip and I dont see any difference in the croud of people walking the streets just as crouded to me as always.
Thanks for putting in all the info nice!

I just thought all of the mylotters would like to know about it. I'm glad you enjoyed my discussion. Maybe someday you will get to see it. I sure hope so, anyway.

Reckon it's due to the economy the way it is, the reason why they can't fill the rooms up? That was just a guess of mine, anyway.

My family and I came to Las Vegas when I was 4 years old. We were on our way to California to visit relatives when we decided to pass through there. We didn't like all of the gambling places but we wanted to see what it was like. Mother told me after I got a little older that she, daddy, and my two older sisters wanted to walk through one of the casinos but they wouldn't let us in because of me, lollol. Anyway, we did spend the night in Las Vegas and we saw the Golden Nugget. I don't remember any of this but I have seen post cards that we bought while we were there. Mother told me that we also saw Hoover Dam. Kathy.

Yes I enjoyed your post very much.
and the Golden Nugget is still there under the experience lights dome.
Dont know why they wouldnt let ya in for ya can walk thru with kids to go eat.
but they really cant be on the gambling floor So a quiick walk thru is what ya get lol.
My dad drove nitro to the dam from LA in the mud also worked on parts of it.

That was 1956 when we were there. Maybe things have changed a lot since then. I guess I'm giving away my age when I say this, lollol. Actually, I don't mind telling my age. I'm 57. Kathy.

myLot reputation of 96/100. Lakota12 (23205)   ranked 87 out of 5,013 in travel  3 years ago

No problem the first time I came to Vegas was 1957 and I still wasnt gambling age.
but I hit the ones at the gas station for fun lol.
Oh Las Vegas was very small back in the 50s Boy how its grown!.
The last few years the sky line has changed so much that you wouldnt reconize it as it was back then.
and I think its so sad that they have put in high rises and big casino resorts.
To me it has lost the charm it had back thien.
and I am 69

It sounds totally amazing. It would blow my mind. One thing stuck out though when you mentioned that you had to pass the slot machines etc to get inside of the hotel. I expect that they are put there to tempt you to put in your change and take a chance at winning. It must have been a wonderful time and I so wish that I could have been there. sigh. One day. You never know what is going to happen next in lifethumbup

myLot reputation of 99/100. cyrus123 (3255)   ranked 26 out of 5,013 in travel  3 years ago

That's right. You never know what's going to happen next in life. You just might get to go someday.shocked You never know. You made a point when you said that the slot machines were probably put where they are to tempt you to put in your change. I never thought about it that way. I just know that gambling is a sin and I was taught to "yield not to temptation". This is the title of a song we sometimes sing in church. Happy mylotting! Kathy.

Hi Jan! I have been missing you the last few times. Where have you been? It's good to see you back.

No, no Billy Ray. When I first got on that shuttle bus, one of the hotel employees came on and asked us if we minded if an entertainer rode with us. The majority of the passengers were Indians and wouldn't say anything. Finally, I spoke up and said we didn't mind. I couldn't help but wonder if it was going to be Billy Ray because I knew he was supposed to be there in concert that night. I also thought that it might be some of his band members. My second guess was the right one. I can't remember the keyboard player's name but he kept us laughing all the time. He was so funny!

I started to go back to the fair in 2000 but I had car trouble when I got outside of Tuscaloosa and ended up having to go homeangry! I was so disappointed!sadKathy.

Hi anniefannie! How are you doing these days? I hope you are doing much better.

I tried to go back to Philadelphia in 2000 but I had car trouble when I got outside of Tuscaloosa (you have to go through Tuscaloosa to get to Philadelphia from where I live) and I ended up having to come back home!angryI was so disappointedsad!

I wasn't going to spend the night this time, though. I was just going to spend the day and come back home that night. It's only about 238 miles from here.

Maybe I will get to go again sometime in the future depending on my financial situation. Kathy.
