South Africa 2010: Construction Workers on Strike!  email this discussion to a friend?

The construction workers building the stadia required for next year's football world cup competition in South Africa have been on strike for the past couple of days. What effect do you think this will have on South Africa's preparation for the competition. The country successfully hosted the 2009 Confederations Cup and many are convinced that next year's competition will be a success.

The workers are demanding for 13% pay rise. They have been offerred 10% increase in wage which they turned down. What do you make out of the demand of these workers, are they deliberately blackmailing the government of South Africa or shold we just refer to them as traitors? I feel they should have taken the 10% wage rise and continue with the construction activities, at least, as a mark of patriotism not only to their country but to the whole of the continent of Africa.

I am from Nigeria, living in Ghana. I'm proud of what South Africa has achieved so far in the preparation for the 2010 world cup competition. Could you be kind enough to share your opinion on this topic?

Hi emmanola,

There is a lot more aspect we have to look into before we can make any conclusion about this strike. They must have a reason for doing that and I don't know the reason :).

You may call them not patriotic enough or even worst as a traitor. But you also must know why they do that. If that is only because of their greediness because they see how successful Confederations Cup is, they you can call them as you like.

But, if they think that they have been underpaid, they have a right to do so. And, I strongly believe that they do that because of this. World cup is just few more month to come. And if they construction is behind the schedule, the workers have to work more and more to put it back on schedule. How if the word done is too far from what were expected? For sure they workers is the one who have to carry all the burden.

But, just like I said before, we as an outsider can only make assumption. We don't know the truth is.

BTW, I hope this will not have any effect on the World Cup organizer there. Lets pray that this will be the tournament to remember for the good reason.

Happy mylotting and have a nice day.

I have not condemned the workers. However, we know the state of the economy worldwide, recession everywhere. I feel the government has tried by accepting to up the workers salary by 10% when they asked for 13% increment. Life is about give and take and compromise.

Moreover, in Africa, the way we look at issues is not absolute as it is done by western legal system. For instance, in my tradition, we say that absolute innocence is rare and absolute guilt is uncommon. I'm afar off but feel the workers need to be fairer to the government of South Africa. Their action is not only hurting South Africa as a country, but the whole of Africa as a continent. It's an unwritten statement that some seem to look for the negative aspect of Africa.

If this is something to do with cultural issues, then I can't really comment. We (Malaysian) hardly heard about any strike by the workers unless there is totally unfair practice or some politician play the part.

In general, 3% extra is a big amount to ordinary people but not for the super rich businessmen. Remember, any project are done by businessmen and not by government himself. The government pay a fix amount to this businessmen to complete the project. They are bound to agreement. And that can't be change without extreme condition.

Businessmen on the other hand always try to make extra profit. Gain - cost = profit. To make extra profit, they always try to lower their cost. If the businessmen think that they can find a lot of people to do that job, they will lower the cost (in this case, the salary). It is written in the free market practice.

As I said before, I don't know the real situation there and all I can do is make assumption.

Happy mylotting and have a nice day.
