I unfortunately live in the city where the only stars I can see are the major constellations. The Big Dipper is always in view, but Orion is there only during the winter season.
One night, I decided to take a drive out into the wilderness (about 30-40 minutes away) and after I stepped out of the car, I looked up into sky and saw...more stars up there than I did in a whole year's worth.
I left that area in awe of the beautiful sky I just saw. In fact...tears were in my eyes. After that night, I don't feel at home until I once again see the sky like that.

Hi there Whateva!
I know how you feel. I like looking at the stars too and I feel peaceful and dreamy whenever I do especially on nights when the skies seem to be filled with those twinkling darlings.
I always associated star with wishes when I was a child. Maybe because most of the fairies wand has one in its end in almost all of the illustrations of fairy tales. Also, because of the shooting star where it is known that we can make a wish when we see one and that wish will come true.
Now I think it symbolizes hope. That no matter how big and dark the skies are, if we have enough hope, we can still see the light, and make other people who see that hope feel good and be inspired.
