I want to visit Malaysia and Singapore Restaurant again | | I lived in Malaysia for a year with a scholarship from an international organization. I finished my certificate in Travel, Tourism and Hospitality. While living in Malaysia, I also got the chance to worked as a singer in various bars and performed in Hotels and Shopping Malls and even sang during Christmas with my group called THE FALALAS. I enjoyed my stay in that country but there is one thing that I will never forget. The restaurants or what they call MAMAK. I used to eat in a fine dining restaurants here in Europe but restaurants in Malaysia is different. Of course, you can see fine dining around Kuala Lumpur. But what I am saying is that, I love to eat outside a restaurant where you can see people passing by, cars, etc. I also enjoyed those very cheap foods. I really admire the service of the people. Restaurants were open almost 24 hours a day. You can even eat in the middle of the night when you are hungry. I never get the opportunity to cook at home. Instead, I always eat outside because I actually can save more since foods are really cheap. After a year in Malaysia, I realized that I wanted to continue my studies but I have limited amount of money since my scholarship was finished. I earned enough in Malaysia through my singing job. Until, I decided to come to Singapore to pursue my Diploma in Casino and Hotel Management on my own. It was a tough times staying in Singapore, since everything is expensive. I also have to pay for everything like apartment, my books, tuition fees and so on. But I managed to get my Diploma on time and I was awarded by the UK BODY in London. I was the only one in my class or batch to get my Diploma on time since I passed all my modules. Most of my friends are still in Singapore because they have not finished some modules particularly in Casino. They say, it was really difficult. But anyways, let us talk about restaurants in Singapore. Singapore have restaurants but not as many in malaysia. Again, the restaurants I am saying are those you can see near the street where you can have your food at cheap price. You can chose variety of foods or if you want fresh rice called fried rice you can get it as the cheapest. You can even take out for your family at home. I miss the carrot cake in Singapore. It does not look like a carrot but it is really a carrot. You cannot see the orange color but a while color cake. It is good to eat right after you have a big lunch. When I get the chance to come back to Malaysia in Singapore in future time, I will love to eat and eat again those foods I have tried before. I am sure, other asian countries do have foods which are almost the same like those I have tasted and tried. Hmmm, good idea. Maybe I will visit Indonesia or Myanmar next time. But I must work hard first. Till here. Keep posting, Happy Mylotting. Thank you for reading. Jeff

I live in Malaysia, thank you so much for all your good words here. (You are making me hungry talking about MAMAK, it is time for breakfast here.)
I hope some Malaysian will read your post and be proud that other people from other country praised a thing about us eventhough it is just food. We have a lot of things that we should be grateful and thankful for..
Thank you!

yuansplace (199) | 5 months ago | Hello there my friend. What can I say? Since my subject is only about restaurants and foods, that is why I have to narrow what I was saying. But to be honest, malaysian people treated me well. I enjoyed staying at Bukit Bintang just walking with ice cream plus the huge shopping malls nearby. I always love the clothes in one shopping mall wherein all the designers are local. I am really proud of you country. That is why I cannot wait but to visit again. I know it will be very long time before I can come again. I have tons of pictures from your country. I have those pictures from Petronas Tower. I also have pictures from my school of course. I have pictures from the KL tower, even from the train stations. I also love the Malay costume. You culture is very rich because of the combination of people. You have malay, chinese and indian. If I may ask you, to which people you belong too? Maybe chinese? Just a wild guess.
We almost have the same number of posts here. I am having the hard time posting because I have so much works. But just today, Malaysia and Singapore just pop up to my mind and I remember all those cheap foods. I remember that I gained weight like almost 4 kilos. I really love your country. Next time when I have the chance, maybe I can visit other towns. I always heard about IPOH because I was a member of the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts before. I used to be part of Broken Bridges. It is a play abour IPOH TOWN. I can still sing that song I memorized. But to be honest, I got sick during the play so I cannot participate in that play. But still, I have the chance to meet all you local stage actor and actresses. Some of them are still my good friends. Some I lost contact.
I am also a good friend of a singer named Mia Palencia. She is from Sabah. I really wish to see my group again.
Anyways, thank you very much. I am happy that really appreciate about what I wrote.

chi2nasrin (434) | 5 months ago | I am a Sabahan but currently staying in Kuala Lumpur. Hmm, I am neither Malay, Chinese nor Indian. My father is Sungai and my mum is KadazanDusun. But I know I look like chinese! Hehe...
Apart from that 3main races, we still have the Orang Asli, Iban, Dayak, Melanau, Bidayuh, Murut, Rungus, Kelabit, Bajau, and so many more I can't recall!! In Sabah and Sarawak, there are so many ethnics.
Well, I hope your wish to come back here will become true!!

akuler (1213) | 5 months ago | Are you came from kg paris:) ... just a wild guest. Because I know there is a lot of orang sungai there especially near kinabatangan.

chi2nasrin (434) | 5 months ago | My father's family is from there, you can only find Sungai race in Sandakan, Sabah. But I don't think Kg. Paris (wah, Paris lagi tu.)

yuansplace (199) | 5 months ago | Ohhh you are Sabahan? Wow. It means you are near Philippines already. I heard a lot about Sabah but I never been there. Actually my ex-girlfriend is from Sarawak. She is a dayak. I know what you are talking about. About ethnicity. I even watched shows in Sarawak showing all the etnics you mentioned. The clothes they worn were actually the best I have even seen so far. They really look very nice with those costumes.
Many sabahan come to Kuala Lumpur for work? I am a half filipino, half swiss. I actually speak some tagalog words. I met some sabahan before when I stayed in the apartment called Mentari Court. It is located at the back of Subang Jaya train station. When they had some constructions in the railway, I even cross the rail just to make a short way to home. Haha. I am telling more.
But thank you very much for coming back here and reply to my message to you. I thank you for being a nice person. Have a nice day. Keep posting. Happy Mylotting.
Best Regards,
Jeff

yuansplace (199) | 5 months ago | Oh akuler, you have some idea about chi2nasrin. Hehe. Maybe you are just neighbors. But thank you very much for coming to my discussion. This just means that there are a lot of Malaysian in this website. I actually like your culture, especially the foods. I am always getting hungry when I remember Malaysia and Singapore. Here in Europe, we have Nasi goreng. But not freshly made. They are actually froren and you have to heat them. It does not really taste good. I still like your fried rice. I can chose a lot. I can actually mentioned those nasi goreng ayam, nasi goreng pattaya, nasi goreng china. Hehe. I just love those. Hmm..getting hungry again.
Happy Mylotting. Keep posting.

If you miss the food so much, maybe you should learn and cook it yourself. Just an idea... (and only if you do cook).:-)

| | 2. akuler (1213) | 5 months ago | Hi yuansplace,
There is a lot more types of food you may enjoyed if you visit other places in Malaysia. Almost every state (negeri) have their own special food. And if you like an outside food, you can consider this is paradise lol. Of course Mamak restaurant is famous here because of their own unique services. I love to go mamak restaurant to have my roti canai and necscafe tarik. And, I always there to watch live football match on Astro.
If you are planning to visit Malaysia again and thinking about food, this is my little guide about what famous food on each state:
1. Penang: Nasi Kandar, Char kuew tiau 2. Kelantan: Nasi dagang 3. Terengganu: Keropok lekor 4. Johor: Rojak 5. Sabah: it is different because there is a lot of ethnic group and each of them have their own dish. Like Bugis for Burasa, Bajau for Putu, Bisaya for ambulat and many more.
There is other type of dishes but I just can't remember:). Maybe there is other fellow Malaysian can give a guide.
I hope you come again and again. And try to go elsewhere especially Sabah, Land Below The Wind.
Happy mylotting and have a nice day.

yuansplace (199) | 5 months ago | Oh now I know what is Negeri. I was in Negeri Sembilan. I hope I typed it correctly. I stayed in a nice Malay House. It was really big and actually, what is inside is already modern. But I have the feeling how it looks like before. I enjoyed my stay there. I even visit some houses of my friends`friend. It was fun.
Hmm, you mean, you have variety of foods when I visit other state or towns. That is really awesome. Here in Europe, I do not see much of that. Almost the same thing. Always pommes and pomme frites. I actually hate it. I prefer rice. Since I have asian blood and I look more of the asian side. But my english is really bad. As what you have mentioned, mamak is really famous. And very cheap and nice fresh foods. I can even serve myself, and take large portion with a cheap price. How nice. I actually have not tried that Roti Canai. I think that was the one that looks like a while paper and round shaped. Wow. That tea tarik is perfect. Hmmm.. I am really getting hungry that is why I keep on coming back to this discussion. Oh you watch football in Astro. Here, football is very famous but I rarely watch. I do not watch TV often. Most of the time, I spend in computer or at work. And meet friends outside.
Thank you for giving some informations and showing me how rich is your country. Plus you even give me a guide. Hmmmm..I actually tried that fried noodle you mentioned, that Char Kuew Tiau, is that a noodle? Maybe not? hehe. sorry I forgot but I tried something that sounds like that in Singapore.
But I appreciate you soo much. Once again, thank you. Keep posting. Happy Mylotting.
best regards,
Jeff

| | 3. scheng1 (1675) | 5 months ago | Hi Yuansplace, I miss the food in Malaysia too. However I do not miss the restaurant food. I prefer those home-cooked food in Malaysia I always like to walk about in the residential areas (those tamans), after 5pm. Many housewives are really nice, they opened their gates, set a few tables and chairs, and they would sell the cooked food. The most unforgetable one was the ginger wine chicken. I paid less than five ringgits for a big clay pot of ginger wine chicken, with rice. The taste is extremely good. That housewife was very generous with all the ingredients. I live in Singapore, and the best time to eat is at midnight. Have you visited the hawker centre in Boon Lay? There is a stall selling Nasi Lemak, only from midnight to three am. You can't miss the stall, there is a long queue every night. it's very fun to queue, and get the Nasi Lemak with fried chicken wings.

|
yuansplace (199) | 5 months ago | Oh really. Why not miss those restaurants? They were really perfect. And absolutely cheap. Maybe I cannot judge the home cooked food because I never get the chance to visit a family and eat in their homes. I never even get the chance to cook for myself since I really love eating outside. And I never even bought a cooking machine or any rice cooker. Haha. I am just too lazy to wash plates. Oh I have never walked to any residential area that you mentioned. Maybe because I have lived in the city. And that ginger wine chicken? I have not heard of that. Hmm but it does really taste good. I will remember that for my next visit.
Yes you are right. You pay less than five ringgit for a big meal. That was really great especially when you are on a budget trip. Good thing also, almost all people speak english.
About singapore, yes I was Boon Lay only twice because I lived in Bedok and for God sake, that was far for me. I even worked in Boon Lay area and I actually resigned in a week because the job was not suited for me, also, I cannot work that far to a home where I can stay free.
But that Nasi Lemak you were saying, Damn perfect. I just love it that food every morning.
Happy eating.
Malaysia Truly Asia. hehe.

scheng1 (1675) | 5 months ago | Hi Yuansplace, I think when you enter a restaurant, in Malaysia or Singapore, you know what the quality of food is like, usually hard to find a restaurant above your expectation. But when I walk into those houses, and order the food from the housewife, I can't really imagine what kind of secret recipe they are using, and the food turns out exceptionally nice. After they are cooking for the locals, once they start to serve bad food, nobody will come anymore, and they can't make money.

| | 4. zed_k4 (4422) | 5 months ago | You are absolutely right about delicious food in Malaysia and Singapore, my friend. I myself come from the lion city and I couldn't agree more that carrot cake is one of the most delicious side-dish ever.
Don't let me start on Mee Goreng, Nasi Ayam (chicken rice), Mee Hoon Goreng, Hokkien Mee, (both Malay and Chinese style), Pineapple Rice and many more.
Did you by any chance manage to try Rojak and Popiah, Epok2x and some other delicacies? Awesome, bro.
I agree...cost of living in Singapore is pretty high and I think with time, it's going to be like London too. We adopt the British system some sort, so the cost of living is pretty much going to be like London soon. Education is important there as well and that's why there are lots of scholarships too. I hope that you can save enough money some time and come to visit again.
I love trips to islands in Malaysia and that includes Pulau Redang, Langkawi Island and many more..
Good discussion here, have a nice day.

yuansplace (199) | 5 months ago | Hi zed. First of all, the last country I stayed was in your country Singapore. I love Singapore very much. All place is accessible and easy to find. Well, since you mentioned your lion city, I remember Sentosa Resort. I even come to that Resort almost every week to meet my friends. We even played volleyball and some indoor games. I actually like Singapore but to be honest, I cannot stay long uder the sun. I noticed that Singapore is now crowded. Too many tourist and permanent residence from other coutries. While shopping, too much people buying things. But I still love your country. I even enjoyed shopping in that place called china town. I forgot the real name for that place but I am sure, it is in Bugis. Oh now I remember, Bugis Street alongside Bugis Junction. My school is actually just near that area that is why I can remember.
Hmm, you mentioned those foods. When people talked about those foods, I start to starve and my consciense is asking me to come to your country again. Hehe. Just because of foods. I actually gained some friends but I do not remember where I put my address book. I must search for it and for sure, before I come, I will contact them. I have not tried that Popiah.
Yeah, Singapore is almost like in London. Singapore is a fine country, very clean and people are disciplined.
Since you also mentioned about education, I am lucky enough to have a diploma from London which I actually learned from Singapore.
I will really save enough money and hope those people I talked here will remember me and will love to see me and consider me as their Mylot friend. Hehe. Oh before I forget, best place for Casino is Genting Highlands. I love the park too.
Keep posting,
Happy Mylotting,
Best Regards,
Jeff

zed_k4 (4422) | 5 months ago | Thanks so much my friend for answering at length. I had a good read and you sure do know a lot about Singapore, much better than me.. haa... awesome..
Yes, the resort in Sentosa is beautiful and the scenery is just picturesque. I am with you on the crowded part. It is really getting to me too, especially when on the bike, everywhere is just so crowded, the traffic is congested and not to mention more jams when an accident happens.
There are also those moments when I feel like migrating, but like you too, I'm sure going to miss the food here. I love Asian spicy food especially. Bugis street is one of those crowded places, ha.. but it's awesome yes...lots of things to be gotten there. If you come to Singapore, you'll notice some changes to Orchard Road, the heart of the shopping hub and you must never forget to take a ride at the giant wheel, Singapore Flyer.
Do come soon.. and spend time with your friends...take care, buddy..

| | | 5. veron1015 (13) | 5 months ago | I was living in Singapore for ten years. I have learnt how to make the carrot cake. It is white in color because it is made from raddish not the orange carrot. All you need is just white raddish, rice flour, dried shrimps and dried mushrooms. Are you interested in making your own carrot cake? If yes, I will teach you the how to? My husband and son love the carrot cake too.

yuansplace (199) | 5 months ago | Hello Veron. Are you still in Singapore. If yes, you must be a permanent residence there. I really wanted to know how to make a carrot cake. Just know I know that it was not really from that orange carrot. That is why me and my Australian friend always saying that how can the orange color disappear. I am reall interested. You can either post it here how to make that carrot care or you can send me in private. But I think it will also be fun if you can share to other mylotters so you can post it publicly. I will appreciate it very much.
Thank you very much.Happy Mylotting. Keep posting
