I think there has been much hyped anticipation at this year's British Open at the famous links course, Turnberry. Especially, when this year's tournament which is starting on Thursday, is no short of favorites like Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, Lee Westwood, Vijay Singh, Padraig Harrington (last year winner of the Claret Jug), Greg Norman (the Great White Shark) whose comeback is really remarkable and the talking point of the professional golf scene and the many other established and distinguished names.
Phil Mikelson unfortunately will not be present as he will be keeping his wife who is recovering from cancer, company. Yet, there is one new comer in this tournament that is worth mentioning here and that is Martin Kaymer from Germany. He is certainly the hottest underdog here as he had just eliminated the European Tour renowns Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin and Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano with a two-shot win at the recent Scottish Open in Loch Lommond and Lee Westwood at the earlier French Open in Saint-Quentin-En-Yvelines. Will this 2007 European Rookie of the Year complete his hatrick in Europe at Turnberry? Golf being a game that is familiar with form, consistency and a little lady luck, just might favor this underdog favorite.
I feel this will not be a Tiger's say as he is playing his first in Turnberry and it will take a lot of steel resilience and discipline to make him a consideration for the final cut.
I just cannot wait for the tee off this Thursday and the final round this weekend. Tiger may be the regarded favorite, however, lest we can see an Open champion in form - I just do not think so. I am expecting Greg Norman to make it to the final round and who knows amongst the top 8 finisher and Martin Kaymer to be amongst the top 3.
How about you?
