Do you think any movie will beat Titanic box office record on the next decade email this discussion to a friend?

Hi myLotters, maybe you all know Titanic is the biggest blockbuster hits of all time, pumping more than a billion profit to the studio since the premiere in late 1997. Since then, no movie ever beat the movie, even the nearest competitor just came up last year, The Dark Knight, failed to beat the record and sit at no. 2 (it masses almost $500 million in US, Titanic $600 million only in US). I think it is very hard to beat Titanic because the movie has to have a great storyline, timeless story, it has to be epic, and very memorable to the audience for repeat viewing. What Titanic succesfuly did is all of that. It may only generate $30 million in its first few weeks, unlike Dark Knight, Spiderman and all those big movies which generates big amount in its first week, but what Titanic astonishingliy did is stay in the top box office for 30 weeks!! It is all because the repeat viewing in the audience. I remember at the time (I was 10) the cinema still play it, even after 4+ months in the theatre. It is hard to see that now, the last one maybe is indeed The Dark Knight, which me myself watch it three times in the cinema. So what's your opinion? What do you the ingredient a movie must have to make this kind of hit?

I believe anything is possible, and I think that the ingredient to make a movie a big blockbuster hit is if it were a true story like the titanic was which pretty much made everyone cry in the end.=) i like true movies.

Maybe Transformers 2 may be able to do it, or at least get close. I don't really know. I think a movie must be appealing to almost everyone, not just 1 target market. Also, it mustn't be too long, or people won't bother watching it again.

Titanic is running almost three hours, Gone With The Wind if you adjusted on inflation rate is the highest gross movie of all time running 3 hours! Even The Dark Knight running 2,5 hours. I just thinking on the opposite of you thoughts, the ingredients for box office smash is it has to be long duration, but people won't feel they watching a 2 hour+ movie because they're so into the movie. I feel that when watching Titanic or Dark Knight or Spiderman 2(which also a 2hour + movie). But I agree with you it must be appealing to any gender and age to create a box office hit.

Although Titanic is a great movie and the historical storyline combined with a commercial romantic plot line obviously contributed to it's amazing success, I would say that the decade it was released is indicative of why it was such a financial success and why it is unlikely that the record will be surpassed.

Back then more people actually went to the movies on a regular basis compared to todays figures, which is partly down to the fact that more and more people download movies on their computers, something which didn't happen back then. So this reason alone will contribute to one of the reasons why Titanic was a Box Office Hit

Add to this when it was released in the December of 1997 it was the most commercially appealing movie to be released that month with the others being distinctly less appealing with the likes of "Mouse Hunt", and "Home Alone 3" also being released. If you continue this on and look at the first 3 months for 1998 again there were no major big budget movie releases. So I would say that because Titanic didn't have any real competition contributes also to it's huge success.

Although it is unlikely that Titanic's record will be surpassed, all it takes is for several factors to align themselves such as lack of competition, a stars death etc etc to suddenly catapult a movie into the realms of mega box office money. Which is part of the reason why The Dark Knight actually came so close to beating the record.

Hmmm, I'm quite disagree with your opinion about the DVD downloads. If the movie is great, people will flunk into the theatres, and strong word of mouth will urge even the disinterested audience to come because of curiousity. Remember, at the time, Titanic hold the record as the most expensive movie ever made, $200 million, and many rumors regarding its financial difficulties because of James Cameron wanted perfection of every details in the movie. When it opened, it only gross around $30-40 million, I forgot, and at the time I think many movies in the past before Titanic era, has surpassed those opening week numbers. I agree with you though that it is the most commercial movie at the time, and also generated by 14 nominees in Oscar for the movie itself. I analyse a big big box office hit had an X factor, for Dark Knight is because Heath Ledger, for Gone With The Wind (which still hold the record as inflation-adjusted no. 1 movie of all time) it's because the insanely popular novel, Star Wars because it is so futuristic and groundbreaking at the time. Thanks for sharing your opinion!

Hi, I sort of disagree with your point that "if a movie is great people will flunk into the theatres", as there are a lot of great films which don't get the box office takings which they deserve but hit greatness when they are released on DVD with "The Shawshank Redemption" being a great example of this.

But I do agree that "strong word of mouth" and media hype "will urge even the disinterested audience to come because of curiousity". I can think of several recent movies which in my opinion are not that great but because of over hyped media attention they have become the must see film and so of course will get the person on the street saying that you should see it purely on the basis that it is the mass opinion. Take for example "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" which is in essence a one trick pony of a movie. But because there was so much media hype about it and the oscar nominations that people went to see it and preached it's virtues as it was the thing to do.

I was hoping for Dark Knight to beat Titanic last year because I think Titanic for me was so overrated. The movie was so long and the storyline for me is so common. I can name a lot of movies wherein a rich girl falls in love with a poor boy. But you are right about the repeat viewing of Titanic. I did watch it several times because of the good looks of Leonardo De Caprio because I was a tween back then and I know a lot of people who did the same thing. lol.

Many people agree with you of the overrated Titanic. But I am the one who think Titanic is a masterpiece. It told us the classic story of love, which is why everyone can related to that. Plus, the Titanic event itself and all those lush of early 1900 era made it more attractive. Besides, it catapults Kate Winslet and Leo DiCaprio to fame and stardom, when I was watching it,I thought Kate even won't get an Oscar nominee but Leo did. I was wrong, Leo didn't get it but Kate did. Looking forward to 2009, both artists has carried itself really-really well. It is amazing to see Kate has 6 Oscar nominee being just 30 years old and won one already, meanwhile Leo has 3 Oscar nominees. I do think Leo's best performance were in Revolutionary Road last year though, I wondered why he even did not get a nominee for that.

Hi sophisticated
I think Ice age 3 can beat Titanic, because as family movie their audience not parents and young child but I see most of teenagers and adult like this movie.

myLot reputation of 96/100. sophisticated_boy (527)   ranked 226 out of 11,354 in watching movies  5 months ago

syangku, Ice Age is far away in beating Titanic record, it needs to rack 500 million more to beat Titanic, and now the movie has already have declining figures in box office. I think for any animation movie, it is hard to beat a live-action movie, mainly because it may not appeal many adult moviegoers. Thanks for the response

Maybe the upcoming Marvel movies in the next couple of years may do it. Several people are anticipating those movies.
