Should college students have to pay a fee for the athletic program?  email this discussion to a friend?

Even if they're not involved or interested in athletics? My college charges a mandatory fee each semester to fund the athletic department. I have a problem with this. I don't use the athletic department, so I don't think I should have to pay for it. I'm not on a sports team and I don't attend the games either. As a matter of fact, I have a moral problem with sports and I think that they are a huge waste of time and money for an academic institution. So should I still be forced to spend my money on it?

There's absolutely no reason for a fee to be levied singling out
the funding for one department over another. Your student body
should unite and present the following argument.

We will concede to the fee for the athletic department only if you
show the same monetary equality amongst all departments. Either fund
the entire college with a blanket fee "or" create fees independent
of one another in order to finance individual departments "or" supplant
such fees with a tuition hike that may be equal to but no more than one
percent.

If they have any sense they would agree to the last option which would
greatly increase funding to all departments equally while at the same
time not making any impact on your pocketbook.

Finally. If the board doesn't listen to the student body at all, you all
may have a legal case against them in court.

Those are a lot of good ideas. Now if only I went to a college with a student body that cared...

LOL. Or maybe I shouldn't be laughing cuz most of America doesn't
care about much these days. We've all become too complacent and
accepting to whatever is force fed us, blah.

Absolutely not,my friend. What you do is refuse pay the money.

It's really not possible to just refuse to pay the money on an individual basis. If you don't pay any part of your tuition or fees, they can kick you out of the school.

Student must not pay for it unless they are on that department. It is not fair to pay. Money is important so why pay for the things you didn't want to use. I think that's the problem on some schools. They should be reported to some agency< they should study it again, student must not pay.

What if I said that my religion was against sports? Then it would be religious discrimination if they made me pay for it.

I think there is no harm if the college charges a small fee for athletic program. What you can do is increase your participation in your college's athletic meets.

I think I made it pretty clear in my discussion post that I don't want to participate in my college's athletic program. I don't like sports and I'm morally against most of them.
