how often should i condition my hair?

You might need to change your products. Have you tried a conditioner that is not so heavy? Usually ones that are more watery are less conditioning, and thicker ones are more so.

If you already tried this then look for a "clarifying conditioner". Clarifying products strip the hair of oil and product build up, and they are usually shampoos, but there are conditioners out there that do this too, while at the same time conditioning.

Or try a "moisturizing shampoo" and then don't use conditioner.

Also, shampoo only your scalp, not the length. Shampooing the length dries out hair.
