I Think My Guinea Pig Is Sick

I also have a guinea pig and he isn't very active. I heard that guinea pigs have short life spans. I would defiantly try cleaning his cage, and giving him a few treats. Mine usually just runs around his cage and then lays around. Hope he gets better.

How old is he? Maybe he is just in a mood like most animals are, take him our for some fresh air, stuck in a cage would suck. But yeah take him to the vet or something too.

I don't have a guinea pig, but I do keep chinchillas, and degus. All small animals like this usually have periods of inactivity. However, if you guinea pig is lathargic for more than a day it could be a sign of serious illness.

The best way to check if your guinea pig is ill now, is by taking a closer look at his droppings. If they are soft and gooey he might have diarrhea. If there isn't any then he might have constipation. These are two very good reasons for lathargic behaviour.

Try feeding you guinea pig a special treat. If he's still not eating take him to a vet because he is probably ill. It is very hard to actually tell when guinea pigs are ill, so it is good you are taking notice of his daily habits like this. Often, giving them lots of fresh hay to play in really makes a big difference to their activity, especially if it is living by itself.

Of course another reason for it being inactive could be that he is bored and needs some new toys to stimulate his surroundings. Try buying him some big cardboard tubes to play in, or some boredom breaker treats. You can get these at most pet shops. Also it might be worth checking the temperature where he lives, because if he gets too warm he is likely to become lathargic and disinterested in his food.

Just some ideas. I hope he feels a bit better after being cleaned out.
