India's climbing suicide rate. |
| |
| I'm particularily worried about the students of this country. South India is known as the capital of the suicide world on some sites. 1 of every 3 suicides reported EVERY 15 minutes in India, is by a student between the age of 15 -25. My nephew is under so much stress and I am petrified for his welfare. I try to give him as much emotional support as possible, but is it enough? I wish I could reach out to more students and provide them with some support. I wish I could start an online community for such students, whereby I can do something to ease their minds and hearts. Please leave any comments to help me understand more. Although of Indian blood, I was born and raised in London. However I have myself experienced suicidal depression many many years ago....but got through it.......I would love to reach out to others. | | | | | |

| | Oh Bless you Raghul, that was so sweet! It's my birthday today and your compliment was truly a blessing. Once upon a time I experienced such things a suicidal tendencies (many many years ago), it's such a lonely thing....having someone 'outside' broadminded to talk to as a friend, is really all it takes not to go the full stretch. Someone whose 'been there' can really help. Yes awareness is really important. Please try to keep this thread alive Raghul in whatever way possible, its a small way to create awareness. Take care | | | |

| | Thank Raghul, i was thinking that Indian films really don't help because they exacerbate (feed) the 'falling in love' hype but at the same time if the films don't have such a content then people would not watch them, it's like what comes first the chicken or the egg? But at the end of the day thats no excuse really because Bollywood etc only cares about one thing....and thats NOT social welfare.....I think its really important also to start some type of trend where these films are ridiculed for their content, rather than idolized. perhaps it would be a good idea to petition some of these directors and actors??? I know it sounds kind of hopeless but.....have to do something.....and who knows how far it could go.....what are your views? | | | |

| | You know, Indian films are soooooo emotional and that in itself is great as the world today has got very cold, so it provides a necessary warmth and balance but I really wish they would channel the emotional content to a more altruistic content...such as films like Erin brockovich.....Border.... For example it would be brilliant to make really deep and emotional movies on people like Subhash Chandra Bose.....or Saravar.....Swami Vivekanada......or all the other amazing Indian heroes who actually channeled all that emotion, devotion to a worthy cause for the benefit of the whole, people like this TRULY love.....and I strongly feel that these people need to be glorified much much more because it gives the Indian youth a perfect format to channel their superb emotions in..... These films don't have to be done on such a huge budget.....like Lagaan for example......but real quality acting should be there with real emotional execution. I mean what are films like Lord of the Rings...or Harry Potter.....in terms of the life of Swami Vivekananda......I really think the youth need to start calling out for such films instead of the third rate insidious, selfish love stories.....they need a proper cause to channel all that love in...they need a proper example to be put forward everyday. | | | |

| | hi sritrinity there should be something like "summer camp" .. for the youngsters to go out of ther family and be with a group of new friends / strangers here let them be themselves and open up to their new friends, as they are youngsters voicing out to youngsters .. it could help But firstly the issue of "love" should be restructured ... because this youngsters especially in India are so confused over "love" and "friendship" issue .. since overly televised love concepts ... It is so scary to put this youngsters in a camp as this will end up producing puppy love.. which will end up "BACK to where we start from" I am also planning in some sort of camp for youngsters in my country ... but short of manpower to asist me .. cheers | | | | | | |

| | Hi there again Sanjana, thanks for writing, yes you are completely right. They would all just get very attached to eachother. For now if you come across any depressed students in India who are genuinely asking for help, please refer them to me. It definitely helps to talk to someone outside the family. Thanks again and wish you the very best with your camps over in Malaysia. | | | |

| | suicides by students in INDIA is only coz of two reasons.. failed relationship or failed in xams i think dese days we are put more stress on education rather than basic moralities..students today are not determined to face failures.they prefer tasting poison to failures.. parents too do lot of unwanted stuffs...dey expect a lot...pressurise a lot..take students' decision of career so as to maintain der prestige n satus etc etc... the best way to adress this issue is to make students morally strong..so do something in this regard | | | | | | |

| | I agree. I think asian parents put alot of pressures on their children. Especially they hope their children can achieve their goals or dreams that were not achieved by them in the past. I think this is not necessary. That's true that every parents want their children to have a good future and earn alot of money. But this does not mean that parents should destroy their children's own dreams. The children should pursue their dreams and choose the road that they want to. Parents are there to guide but not control. My parents used to put alot of pressures on me and focus on the scores. That makes me into a person who is also focus on the scores. Seems like students here study not for gaining the knowledge but for passing the examination. The marks of the exams represents everything and that consequently turn into many tragedies. Things will only change if there is a change in the society too. | | | |

| | Yes I totally agree with you, you have expressed everything very well. It also seems 'failed realtionships' are another cause of suicide, the youth become so attached and co-dependent on another, this dependency is then re -emphasized and encouraged in Indian films...which worries me....it sets a bad example as REAL life is not always like this...you don't always get the partner that you wish for. Parents have to change definitely but so does the way we are taught about 'falling in love'. I strongly feel Indian films perpetuate the problem by showing endless melo-dramatics about romance. Romance is beautiful but one's life should not revolve around it. One's heart should be revolved in some type of mission to improve society, we need to learn how to love ourselves and not be too dependent on others fulfilling this need, in this way, we need to deploy our sentimental nature on things which are more transcendental and focus on humanity at large rather than making sentiments the pivot of our own indulgent desires. | | | |

| | in our religion, suicide is almost prohibited and every person in us can never think about doing this ever in his life. God has given this life to us and we do not have the permission to end it without fighting against problems. Life is full of luxury and love and at the same time full of toil, tears and problems. But one should face the problem with strength. I think if the students or any person will be educated in the sense of suicide as a crime and change their minds in respect with religion then may be suicide can be controlled. | | | | | | |

| | Thank you for responding Coolcat. See the thing is, is that suicide is against ALL religions, accept perhaps in the Japanese culture (where it is an honourable thing to do, but only for the right reasons of course). Now Indian students are aware of their religion at large. But they still get to the point of despair, where they feel SO bad that they just want to end it. But I think true religion and spirituality is on the decline in India and more and more youth are loosing faith due to all the hypocrisies in the people who have given Religion a bad name, using it for their own personal gain. There used to be a time when India was filled with spiritual vibrations, but now more and more people are just turning materialistic and thus these students have no one to turn to, everywhere they turn it's the same. We....me and you need to take our spirituality more seriously, turn to the likes Of Ramakrishna Paramahansa and Vivekanada and for a change really DO what they told us to....because we are all responsible. We are all responsible for the death of these students. if we take our spirituality more seriously then so will our friends and theirs and theirs and so on. There's no point in putting Ramakrishna Paramahansa and Vivekananda on the mantelpiece, offer them oblations, when in fact all our time is spent doing everything else but meditating. We all need to meditate more and go deeper in ourselves and help others more. Why blame the dead, they have already suffered, we should blame ourselves instead. | | | |
