A national campaign against first-time drunken-driving offenders is gaining momentum. State and federal government is looking at placing a mandatory use statute into drunk driving laws, requiring violators to use breathalyzer failsafe devices to start their engines. Just this year, three more states have put laws in place requiring all violators to have these alcohol ignition interlocks installed in their cars. That makes the total number of states requiing these devices 11. The alcohol ignition interlock requires drivers to submit a breath sample and if the device detects alcohol it prevents the engine from starting. These devices are currently installed in about 150,000 vehicles in the United States. That number would be closer to 1 million if all offenders were required to have them installed.
