| | Good question dude but the answer is very simple for this question. At the time of evolution even Giraffe had normal necks like as other animals have. But due to the evolution the neck of the Giraffe went on growing tall and now we can see the tall neck of this animal. The reason for this is that the giraffe wanted to eat fresh leaves of the tall trees and due to this the streching of neck took place and thus we can see long necks of them. Let me know if any further details you have. | | | | | | |

| | lol, i guess that might be during the time that all leaves and grass are dried and what left are those at the higher branch. and they tried to reach it as far as they can til they got their nech long lol... just kidding.. i dont know what others can say about it. | | | |

| | shankarbaddi is correct. And this is because there are other herbivores that eat from the lower branches, example: elephants. And they eat quite a lot, so if the giraffes can't reach the food and everything within their reach is being eaten they had to adapt. so now they eat at the top of the trees and shorter animals eat lower where they can reach. | | | |

| | yes, I too have heard about the evolution thing, but what I don’t understand is why only the giraffe was privileged thus…I mean there were so many other animals who could not reach the lower leaves and had to survive on grass…so why was the giraffe selected for this particular evolutionary advantage!!! | | | |

| | At sudip its an evolution stage at that kind of stage anything can happen, take an example of Human beings, we can see there are so many evolutions stages. The evolution is not yet or cannot exactly tell that its completely over its a very very long process its might take 100's of years together. There is a part in our body named as apendix which is small there is no work of this who knows there might be another evolution stage where the humans who are born are without this apendix, thus evolution is a long long process to go. | | Actually the right answer is that giraffes have long necks so they can reach the top of the trees to eat leaves where other herbivores cannot reach. That is why they have long necks, and they adapted that way, if you look at a chart showing their ancestors they actually had shorter necks. | | | | | | |

| | Actually, there is a right answer. It is based on evolution. The ancestral line of the giraffe all had shorter necks, but they got sequentially longer with the evolution of each species, because being able to reach vegetation in high places was a niche that had yet to be filled. So, over time, the ancestors to the giraffe, as they kept reaching higher and higher for the vegetation in the trees, they began to produce offspring, some of which had longer necks than others. The offspring with longer necks had an advantage over the ones with shorter necks. Thus, the reproductive success of those with longer necks was higher, resulting in more offspring produced in subsequent generations that had longer necks, until finally, we had a new species, the giraffe. This did not happen overnight, but rather over millions of years' time. | | | | | | |
