A lady in a faded grey dress and her husband, dressed in a homespun
suit walked in timidly without an appointment into the Harvard
UniversityPresidents outer office.
The secretary could tell in a moment that such backwoods, country
hicks had no business at Harvard and probably didnt even deserve to be
in Harvard.
We want to see the President, the man said softly. He will be busy all
day, the secretary snapped. We will wait, the lady replied.
For hours the secretary ignored them, hoping that the couple would
finally become discouraged and go away.
They didnt and the secretary grew frustrated and finally decided to
disturb the president. Maybe if you see them for a few minutes, theyll
leave, she said to him.
The President, stern faced and with dignity, strutted toward the couple.
The lady told him, We had a son who attended Harvard for one year. He
loved Harvard. He was happy here. But about a year ago, he was
accidentally killed.
My husband and I would like to erect a memorial to him, somewhere on
campus. The president wasnt touched....
He was shocked. Madam, he said, gruffly, we cant put up a statue for
every person who attended Harvard and died. If we did, this place
would look like a cemetery.
Oh, no, the lady explained quickly. We dont want to erect
a statue. We thought we would like to give a building to Harvard. The
president rolled his eyes. He glanced at the gingham dress and
homespun suit, and then exclaimed, A building
Do you have any earthly idea how much a building costs. We have over
seven and a half million dollars in the physical buildings here at
Harvard.
For a moment the lady was silent. The president was pleased. May be he
could get rid of them now.
The lady turned to her husband and said quietly, Is that all
it costs to start a university? Why dont we just start our own?Her
husband nodded.
The presidents face wilted in confusion and bewilderment.
Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford got up and walked away, traveling to Palo
Alto, California where they established the
University that bears their name.. Stanford University, a memorial to a
son that Harvard no longer cared about.
Most of the time we judge people by their outer appearance, which can
be misleading. And in this impression only we tend to treat people
badly by thinking they can do nothing for us thus we tend to loose our
potential good friends, employees or customers.

What a great story I loved it. A lot of people unfortunately judge people on how they look or are dressed. Take for an example Susan Boyle who appeared on Britian's Got Talent Show. She came out on to the stage to sing. The judges and audience were rolling their eyes and saying to themselves this is going to be a waste of time. She was a lady dressed looking older than her 48 years and her hair was partly gray and you could tell she wasn't one who cared how she looked. Well when she started to sing she sang like an angel. I was crying out of joy and amazement. The judges and audience were all in shock and dumbfounded. They couldn't believe it. In fact one of the judges said "we saw you come out and we really didn't think you were going to be that good at all, We judged you and we shouldn't have." So never judge a book by its cover I always say, you may more often than not be surprised.

Yep lelin, we usually make the mistake of judging people by thier looks. I did watch Britans got talent on U Tube and I was equally amazed when she sang. The hair stood up from the roots. I believe she came second, not very sure. Who won the first prize. Id like to see that too. Thanks for bringing back happy memories of Susan Boyle. I still see it now and then.

I think it was a group of guys who won, they may have been dancers. I'm not sure.

This is such a great story. Its true that we shouldn't judge other people of how they look like or how they dress down. We are often misinterpreted of some people. in reality, most of the rich people usually wear simple clothes and no flashy things. They do these so that people will not think that they are carrying big amount of money and they aren't going to be robbed. I also have an experience like that before. Here it goes:
I went to department store and going to buy a luggage for my travelling needs. It was my first time to travel abroad so I need a luggage for myself. I was wearing simple clothes and slippers that morning when I came in to the store. I asked the salesman from the luggage section about the different prices of the luggages. He was entertaining me at first. Suddenly, a couple who were wearing nice clothes came and started to ask about some luggage prices too. The salesman who was attending to me started to ignore me and went to the couple. I really got pissed off. There were other salesmen who can take care of the couple and not just him. I was watching them. The couple didn't buy anything. I turned around and decided to go back the next day. The next morning in the same time to the prior day, I was there at the store again. I was wearing a nice black dress and shoes, even wearing make-up on my face. The same salesman was also there as well. I started to look at the luggages again. The salesman was trying to ask questions on which luggage I would like to buy. I ignored him and still looking at the other displayed luggages. He followed me. I got pissed off with him again. So I asked him, "Why are you like that? I was here yesterday and I really wanted to buy a luggage but you ignored me. I am not asking any attention from you now and you are following me like a dog!"
The salesman was surprised and didn't know what I was talking about. I explained to him what happened the day before and what I was wearing. His mind was refreshed and he asked an apology for the incident. I bought a big luggage that day, I asked him to carry it for me together with the air conditioner that I also bought. He has accompanied me to the taxi bay. He loaded my purchases into the taxi and I gave him a tip before I left. He thanked me for that. I was laughing at him when I had left, I know he has learned a lesson from that.

Good for you sophie, you sure taught that haughty guy a lesson, he wont forget easily in his life. Actually we are all at fault to some extent, living in the show of world. There are people who dress simply and are rich, and there are rich people who show off. Its sort of confusing to some extent. But the moral behind the story is clear, judge not by the appearance. Thanks .

This is a unique story and a lesson who judge the people by their outer appearance. Most of us judge the people by their outer appearance and profession. We think poor people are greedy. Few days ago a rickshaw puller of our city found a bag on the seat of his rickshaw. He uncovered the bag and found bundles of notes inside the bag.He could take away the money to his slum house and could change his fate. But the rickshaw puller went to the nearby police station and gave the bag to the duty officer. The officer found one million rupees inside the bag. There was a notebook and the address and phone number of the owner of the bag.The officer called the man.The man came to the police station and expressed gratitude to the poor rickshaw puller. The man gave the rickshaw puller one thousand Rupees. So outward appearance is not the identity of a person and the poor are not always greedy.

Yes, we usually make conclusions of a person by his appearance, and its a fault most of us are associated with. There are lots of people in the world, mostly poor who are more honest than most of us. I guess the amount of Rs.1000/- is very less, considering there was a million inside the bag. Maybe the guy who lost it was going to deposit it for his company, in that case, 1000/- is fine. If it was the owner of the cash, then Id say he was stingy. Thanks.

very nice story. can i put this to my friendster blog?? most of us are always deceived by their appearances. i remember this movie i've watched here in our country. a cab driver saw two groups of passengers. a group of old ladies and a group of gorgeous young ladies in miniskirts. of course he chose those young ladies though the old ladies ask him first. not knowing that they're robbers. they took everything to him, his cab, his shirt and pants and of course his money.

Hiya delrene, you are most welcome to put this story on your blog. Belive me, th e more the people read this, the more there will be a change in attitude. Its human nature I guess to judge people like this. As for the cab driver, poor guy. His libido left him in this situation. Besides, it was his duty to take up the passenger who asked him first. Thanks.
