I am mostly reading books in my native language, so there's no need for a dictionary. When I'm reading something in a foreign language (I'm speaking 4 foreign languages), then it may happen, of course. Usually, if I understand the meaning of an unfamiliar word from context it is used I do not check it, but when I am not sure, then I grab for my dictionary.

In fact, it happens sometimes... First foreign language I learned was Russian, then came German, then Finnish, and only then English. Because I'm working online a lot, I'm mostly using English now, the language I learned as adult. Other three are becoming more and more passive with every year. I.e., I can understand everything but if I have to speak, then at first the English words pop up in my mind, and only then German (or Finnish, or Russian) words. Not a very pleasant situation, when it happens in real life!@careguarden (5670)

Yeah, i am just like you. I also tend to ignore those unfamiliar words while reading (fortunately there aren`t many of them) so as to continue the joy of ride on the words of the book uninterrupted.
But, most of the times, i refer to the dictionary later for those words.
Happy Mylotting!!

If I don't know the word I look it up about 98% of the time. I recently got this reader app for my iPhone and you can check on the definitions of words while you are reading, it is really awesome and much more convenient than pulling out the old dictionary or trying to finding it online. I think this will really help me increase my vocabulary a great deal

I will turn to the dictionary only when I confront an unfamiliar and useful word in my opinion. Some words I don't know their meanings, but I can skip them to get the general idea about the whole text.
