Carnies

Do carnies creep you out? I think they have been unjustly stereotyped as bad people, running from the law or what not. I actually had a great opportunity to meet with a few carnies last year while at the fair, and they were some of the most polite and well mannered people I have ever met! It is another "elite" race of people I am intrigued by. They work their fingers to the bone for slave wages and continue on carrying a name that most people would rather spit on. Not fair.....

I agree that carnies still have a bad name, but honestly, when they got it they had truly earned it. There has always been a difference between the acts and the carnies, and that really has changed some too.

When and why, when they earned the bad repuation, did they truly deserve it? And what is the difference between the acts and the carnies?

the carnies were barely paid and sometimes barely fed, and back in the early days they were known to steal chickens and clothes on the lines as the show left town. the acts, on the other hand, were paid, because they could go to a different show if they weren't and fed, and otherwise treated pretty well in the old days they were often vagabonds and drifters, or criminals so there really were good reasons to not trust them - but all that changed in the later part of the 20th century - but stories have a long life....

the ones around here are all nice people. There is a midway that comes to town once a year, and I've actually gotten to know the same ones year after year, when I've gone. They recognize me. I think that there are a lot of really lousy stereotypes out there about all kinds of people.
