The above link directs you to a news article concerning a dog bitten by a rabid raccoon. I searched for, and could not find, a better source to discuss the event that I saw on the news today.
The dog was four months overdue for its rabies vaccine shot, and was bitten by a raccoon that tested positive for rabies. The dog, which the owners revealed in the aired news story, is eleven years old, and will have to undergo a quarantine at their home for six months.
The owners had to build a kennel INSIDE OF a kennel for their protection, and may not have contact with their pet. It was never revealed what method they had to keep the pet fed, watered, and the kennel clean, which concerns me.
While I understand that some families are short on cash these days, this incident could have- should have- been avoided. And it would have, should the owner have kept her pet updated on his vaccines. Even if it came down to saving a few dollars every paycheck, just that amount would cover the cost of vaccines for your pet, and possibly even a yearly exam, depending on what your local clinic charges.
Perhaps I am being too hard on this family.
What is your imput? Please discuss.
