What are your feelings towards a beggar? |
| |
| You find that there are a lot of beggars in many cities. In some cities begging is an organized network and the beggars yo see are actually working for a big network. They are paid daily wages. One may feel sorry for the small handicapped child who is begging, but in actual fact the child does not get what you pay him or her. The money goes to the mafia network. I think twice before giving money to a beggar. What do you think? | | | | | |

| | I think everyone regards a beggar with a bit of skepticism. They wonder why the beggar can't go to a temporary agency or an employment agency and get a job, just like we have. Some of us work more than one job, why can't the beggar get just one? Some homeless people/beggars are addicts, some are veterans, some are runaways, some of abandoned, some are mentally ill. I can't stand it when I don't have spare money to help them with; but I need all I have. They, too, could go to a library and use the internet and do paid to clicks and mylot here and there, and make some money. Exploiting a handicapped person is just awful. Where did you read that there was proof showing this was a mafia network? When I do have the money, I do spare it, and I feel good about myself, knowing I am helping someone. I handed a dollar to someone once, and he smiled and thanked me, exposing his one tooth. That's right, he only had one tooth. It made me cry. Some people dress down, sit by a freeway entrance all day begging for money, and then walk to their BMWs at night, and go back to their house. That makes people leary of genuine people who need help. My friend recycles her cans for money. She gives that money to a homeless man local to her. Its very sad, and there is no reason anyone should not have food or shelter in this day and age. | | | | | | |

| | Here in Atlanta we call them Fagin groups. The question has arisen as to whether they are truly homeless or just shiftless. Nonetheless, I too give to homeless folks when I can. And I'm not really concerned with how they got to that point. I have been hungry and alone before and wish it on no one..therefore I help...And this may be my ego talking, but I believe I can tell. People who are truly homeless and desperate have a look in their eye that a conman can't copy. Folks without that look don't get my help. I recall when I was little stuff, mid to late 50's.I was in downtown Cincinnati with my mom when a vagrant (as they called them then)approached us begging for help. He showed my mom the blisters on his hands as testament to the fact that he was really trying to make it. My mom gave him a dollar bill...As we continued on she told me not to tell the rest of the family (my dad's kin) because they wouldn't understand..that they'd say he'd just spend it on alcohol because he was one of 'them'..and she said that he may spend it on alcohol or he may spend it on food, as he said he would..but as was her duty she gave to help with the best of intentions for the man's welfare and any abuse or misuse of it was on he who did so. | | | |

| | Fagin - is that like from the play, Oliver Twist? Your mom set a good example. I am glad you can discern between a genuine situation and a conman. I don't think I would be able to. I think conmen are brilliant, though. I wish they would harness their intelligence and scheming into something that would help people instead of scamming them. Out here in Cali, we have our homeless, and we have Hollywood. They have people who dress as superheroes for the tourists to take pictures with, and they work on tips. Some have been arrested for getting a little aggressive in requesting tips. Here is a cute little documentary I found on it at hulu (intended for mature audiences - you may have to log in.) It is called Confessions of a Super Hero. http://www.hulu.com/watch... | | | |

| | Forgive my ignorance/naivety, but where is the mafia/network begging taking place? Is it in the states or abroad? | | | |

| | I believe that the begging mafia had infiltrated even the major cities of the world. In fact, the beggars have made it so subtle the ordinary citizens have not realized they had been victimized until the economy had crashed. Of course there is a big difference with this kind of begging and that with the genuine poor. My heart goes to those who truly suffer because of poverty. | | | |

| | In our country, one of the modus operandi of syndicates is that they send out children to beg in the streets and they collect the money afterwards. Some beggars, if they are not part of a crime organization would use the money they have collected to buy addictive substances. Yes, this situation is very real. Whenever I see a beggar, especially if it's a child, my heart is torn. Knowing what I know, I am skeptical that maybe by giving the beggar money I am just supporting the syndicates that are behind them. So what I do is I buy them something to eat, instead. | | | | | | |

| | I used to give money to the beggars, that was until I discovered some of them are cheaters. The problem is, it's hard to figure out who cheat and who's not. They're better than any actors. It's irritating. I don't mind sharing but I hate being cheat. It's taking advantage of other people kindness. | | | | | | |

| | I will sometimes give small change and sometimes wont. The things that stop me from giving is the fact that (As someone above pointed out) so are people that will walk to their posh cars and go to their houses at the end of the night, and that is something that really gets me mad. Also I dont like the fact that many of them will use the money to go buy themselves some drugs. But I really dont mind giving to those who genuinly need the help. | | | | | | |

| | yes me too I used to give to beggars as a form of pity to them but I realized that giving them money is not really helping them. Instead the best way to help is have like a homeless shelter and get them to go and build their lives from there. But its not so easy as begging really is a problem worldwide. | | | |

| | You are right, we have to stop the cycle, but how? I'm dumbfounded. I think I am going to research some shelters around my town and ask what services they provide. I know of one that gives food, and a place to shower, and a place to use as an address, so when you look for a job, you can list contact information. I don't know of any sleep-in shelters, so I am gonna go through google and see if there are any around my town. I want to know more about how I can help people help themselves. Some people are homeless by choice, and those are the ones that confuse me the most. I understand not wanting to materialistic, but having a modest indoor home is better than pushing your belongings around in a supermarket cart, and not knowing where you will be sleeping. | | | |

| | Hello ladybugmagic, I think prevention would be better than cure in this. So may be we need to study what prompts children to leave home, or young girls to leave their homes. And thereafter the course to this profession. Like the medicines that disturb the route of the disease we need to find a solution that does not lead to such situation. We do have YMCAs, and YWCAs for young people, but the younger ones are truly helpless, if they are beaten by step parents. The method suggested by u is immediate relief but does not really stop the problem. And having a home is a good thing, but almost impossible for many many people in lower categories. After all homes are costly. And they do need to drift at times as their type of jobs may be such. I wish somebody brilliant would come up with a solution to this. | | | |

| | Normally when I see a small child or am old man I feel pity for them. But when I see a 30-40 years old man begging on the road side I get annoyed sometimes. I mean he can do some work and earn instead of begging. But you are right begging is more of a industry. Some gangs catch these children and old people and make them to beg. This way they are getting to earn lots of money. Once my sister saw on roadside a very young kid begging. She knew if she will give her money it will not go to her. Instead she went to nearby shop and bought a sandwitch for her. She ate that and she was happy. I was amazed at the thinking of my sister. Really nice. | | | | | | |
