Do you care that Geocities are going away?  |

 A few weeks ago, I recieved an email from Yahoo stating that Geocities (their free webhosting) is going to close in October. Basically, the notice was trying to sell me Yahoo hosting at eight dollars a month.
Now, I am not really interested in transfering my Geocities sites to Yahoo hosting. They get very little traffic. And they look like a blind monkey put them together (geocities site building tools had a lot to desire).
My blog gets more traffic, and serves the function that the website was supposed to (serve as a web presence for myself and the Golden Dawn lodge I belong to).
Therefore, I seen no reason to pony up the money to transfer my pages opver to Yahoo hosting. I have decided that I am just going to let them disappear.
So is there anyone that is going to care when Geocities completely disappears?

I always have loved angelfire!) But there are so many other free web hosing/web site building ect. sites that if one dies.... oh well.
Webs.com (I have a site over there) is gearing up to take the influx of Geo users by making their website upload tool compatible with pretty much any thing. It looks pretty nifty really.

| 5. bluesinjid (592) | 4 months ago |  Well, it sure is sad to see such a historical part of a hosting company, and one of the oldest free hosting at its time come to an end. Basically, when Yahoo bought it, they were trying to find a way to monetize it,as they couldn't afford to give out free hosting to so many people. I guess they couldn't find a way to make it profitable, so now they will close it and recommend people for their paid hosting, which I really think is not really great.
There are other sites out there that have free hosting now, such as the popular Wordpress and Blogger, and I am sure people will find alternatives, but again,it is sad to see a piece of history disappear.

| 6. blackbriar (6209) | 4 months ago |  -smacks head against desk- I totally forgot about my geocities website that I had set up back in 2002 and now have no clue how to find it since I've changed ISPs and emails numerous times since then. I don't even remember what all I had on it. Have no clue why I had completely forgotten about it but I remember having fun setting it up. Guess I'm not gonna care about Geocities once they are gone since I forgot all about it years ago.

| morgandrake (1442) | 4 months ago | It was fun setting it up the first time. It was the first site I set up. But since then I have discovered much better ways to do things. Geocities is quite frustrating compared to the tools that I am using with the Office Live site (the lodge's stie). Of course, that is one of the reasons I think Geocities is disappearing; all the competition has better tools to do the same thing.
I have copies of all the pages I had up, even if some of them are only Pdfs. The trick would be finding them.
Myself, I still using the same two email addresses that I started out with eight years ago. I don't switch providers because it is just too much work to update everything. | |

| 9. barrudaki (1262) | 4 months ago |  Odd I thought they closed that down years ago, when I use to have my site there I got an email back in 2003 saying they were closing down and they tried to get me to sign up for yahoo hosting. I didn't do it and just let the site drop.
I'm not sad they are closing, if they really are closing. If you want to keep your site maybe you can transfer the content to godaddy.com they offer hosting basic 5 page sites for very little money a year.
