There is so much kitty bad news that when I see stories about people helping cats it makes me want to pass it along. Stoney Brook University in New York is helping its feral cat population. The University formed a network in 2002 in response to numerous feral cats on campus. Since then The Stoney Brook Cat Network has trapped, vaccinated and spayed or neutered over 300 cats. They also won part of the petfinder and animal rescue site funding for organizations. They plan to use it for supplies, vaccinations and medical treatments. Many of the professors on Campus participate in the network in order to help the kitties abandoned there. Read more about it here. http://www.northshoreoflongisland.com/Articles-i-2009-08-13-81031.112114-sub_Felines_have_friends_in_high_places.html (not a referral link). Have you ever helped a feral cat on your University Campus. Does your school feed kitties? One of my schools back in Arkansas had a few cat feeding stations on its campus. Do you think Universities should help cats in this way? Most Universities have feral cat populations and I for one am glad this University is stepping up and helping its cat population.

I think that's a wonderful idea that the Stoney Brook University is doing. No, when I went to college (back in the Civil War days..LOL) we didn't even have a feral cat population...never saw one kitty while I was attending Queens College. At least the fate of the feral cats at Stoney Brook is much better than JFK airport...I was trying to find up-dates and if they went through with their plans, but at JFK airport the plan was to trap and round up all feral cats and well, kill them off

no-but the shipyard my dad worked for supported a colony of 20 ferals. he said the guys used to bring them food and share their lunches. that must have been hilarious to see these big, tough steelworking guys poo-poo over lil bitty kitties.

Nice, most men will say they don't like cats, but they really do, they just think it ruins their image. I am glad they fed the kitties there. I wish I had a picture of those big tough guys feeding cats their lunches!

it was so cute.they even made them a doghouse type of shelter. i think there are still 5 descendants there, because they started doing a trap/spay/return so mama cat didn't keep having kittens.

The University of Texas has, in the past said that they were going to kill the feral cat population. So, I have helped trap a cat or two that were being feed near where my former roomie worked and get them to their new home. I also once trapped a feral kitten just off campus and he lived with us the rest of his life - about 13 years - not bad for a cat I couldn't do much for if he got sick. I also once helped a lady who ran out of gas when she was taking a stray home from the University. We took the cat to her house, then helped her get the gas for her car. Well, when we were going out a bit later we saw that she had left some mail in the back seat - since it was going to the IRS, we decided to take it to her rather than just drop it in the mail. She greeted us at the door with a kitten in her hand. we ended up taking that kitten home...

That's great to hear. There are a lot of helpless animals out there that needs help. I am about to enter a university too. I hope they also will do something to help the animals.
