Why do some people do not want a girl child be born to them?

I think it is because of culture and tradition. In on old Victorian times, a son is needed for the King to pass down his thrown. It was also the same in China. In America, property can only be passed on the males, and females couldn't vote. I think a lot of that has changed already and it really only depends on the parents.

The very topic of your discussion made me feel that you are Indian and I was correct! I think this is more of a concept with developing patriarchal society where boys are looked up to carry on the family name and look after parents in old age. Nowadays however with so many girls working and earning handsomely, looking after parents is no longer a sole responsibility of boys. Regarding carrying on the family name….well, I’m not really bothered as to whether anyone would take my name or not after I am gone. It’s the people who we leave behind who matter and if they remember us well, then we have lived our life well.
