Let's Get Real About Michael Vick..................  email this discussion to a friend?

Beofre, I begin this discussion I will say that I disagree 100% with the involvement that Michael Vick had in the dog fighting ring. I think it is horrible to treat an animal that way.......now comes the big HOWEVER....
The attitude of some that believe he should not return to the NFL is equally horrible. Let's get real for a second.....Dog Fighting rings are not a new thing, neither is chicken fighting. In East TX 8 were arrested and 22 more were arrested in Illonois and Missouri, some 200 dogs were involved. These people, if convicted in a court of law will serve their time in jail for these crimes.
Micheal Vick has served his time!!!!! Had Michael Vick not been the quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons he would not have been demonized in the media.
Also, Michael Vick was not the only person involved here, let's remember that his realtives and friends also owned a huge stake in the responsibility for the crimes, but MV served the majority, if not all of the time in jail. He had the most to loose and he was the bigger media story!! I question how involved he really was while at practice, on the field and traveling between state to state city to city....
If all were equal, the East TX story would have received a lot more attention. They persecuted him in the media because he was famous.
I have heard some say..."he does not DESERVE to be in the NFL"....
My question is...since when has any professional athlete DESERVED to be in any professional league on any merit except their athletic talents and abilities? Why are these athletes continually held to the standard of "role model" They are not role models, neither are the actors in hollywood. What makes the person throwing a football, baseball or basketball...THE PERSON to teach your children to aspire to be? Dont get me wrong there are some great athletes out there that are doing excellent things for the community, but I would caution suppoting a child, pointing to any one person and idolizing them" or allowing that child to think they have failed if they "are not like them"
Personally, I am glad Michael Vick is back in the NFL. I think he will do an excellent job as an Eagle! He made his mistakes and he paid the price...he's human, demonizing him should be reserved for those of us with clean hands and minds......and not one person on this earth qualifies!

I think Michael Vick should be put in a ring with another person, made to fight until one of them is killed. He should be starved and beaten, as were the dogs in the fighting rings, and then, he truly would have paid his price.

I heard his apology speech: "I can't believe I wasted my time doing something so pointless." I am guessing his PR rep told him not to mention how cruel and inhumane of a thing it was to do.

I agree, we should not idolize celebrities just because, but, anyone in the public eye is forced into that position, in this society. Knowing that, you should use the publicity to set a good example. Not torture animals.

I see nothing wrong with him going back, because he did do his time. The problem that i have is that the only reason he got his job back and is being given the chance is because of the media.

Most people that are felons, and have also done their time, have a hard time finding employment once they are out of prison. They are not given another chance. Whats good for him or any other celebrity should be just as good for the normal person.

dlr297, you are right. There are plently of felons out there today struggling to get back in regular everyday life and there are employers that refuse to give them a chance to change their life. I am not disagreeing with you there.

Michael Vick had his reputation destroyed by what he did and rightfully so. I am not sure how strong or weak the media's role was in getting him the job with the eagles. Donnovin McNabb had a lot to do with getting him the position with the Eagles. He wanted him there and he presented the initial proposal, the media may have picked it up from there.

You know what makes me really mad about the whole thing? Shortly after his release, another NFL player(I believe Donte Stallworth) served 30 days in jail,24 with good time, for killing someone while driving drunk.
I have not heard half as much about this story,or heard all of the angry remarks as I have with Michael Vick.

How sad is it when an animal's life is more valuable than a human's?

I do not agree with waht he done, but hey, atleast it was not a person. He paid his debt by spending a long time in prision.I too am glad he is back in the NFL.We all make mistakes and the key is to learn from them.We can not live in the past.

I hope he has many years of success with the NFL and anything else he chooses to do.

I am astonished that the drunk driver only got 30 days for killing someone. I would think that vehicular man slaughter while under the influence would land at least a year and court ordered alcoholoc treatment.

Saying, "at least it was not a person" is very degrading to the animals that were tortured and abused at the hands of Michael Vick. It's as if there were a kid killed, and I would say, "at least it wasn't my kid". Life is life, and an animal's life is equally as valuable as a human's.

When Michael Vick is starved, abused, caged, and beaten the way his dogs were, then he will have learned from his mistake.

Until then, he deserves nothing.

He didnt even spend a full 30 in jail after he got time for good behavior!
The public was not at all concerned about this like they were with Michael Vick.I wonder why?

myLot reputation of 96/100. erikmama (4232)   ranked 178 out of 26,920 in people  3 years ago

BTW...I love animals, too. A human lifem,is however, suppose to be more importatn. He paid his debt for what he done.

myLot reputation of 51/100. ladybugmagic (896)  3 years ago

We intersect in our thoughts on this, in that we both think the drunk driver did not do his fair share and Michael Vick's stint was more sensationalized - it made for better ratings.

We both love animals.

But, I can't agree that a human's life is supposed to be more important. Who said that? Humans did. Ask any cow going for slaughter if he thinks he would rather be there and if he thinks a human's life is more important.

Yes, but would you rather a cat, dog, or cow be murdered or your child, grandfather, or brother?

myLot reputation of 51/100. ladybugmagic (896)  3 years ago

I can't answer that.
