Why do some Christians call the earth "Mother Earth?"

Is it proper for a Christian to call the earth "Mother Earth?". I asked this question because I have heard many Christians calling the earth, "Mother Earth" with a capital "M" and "E" respectively for both mother and earth. Why not just call it earth. Why add "Mother"? Is she a person? I have heard and read about the New Age movement and have undesrtood that they are the ones who started this idea, calling the earth "Mother" with Dr. James Lovelock. But must christians participate in the green movement? I know we should care for the environment because God had also commanded us to do in our little and simple way. But must we participate in the "green movement" as other Christians are doing now? What can you say?

God is our Father and the Earth is our Mother. Think about this. Who made Adam? God sis. What did God use to make Adam? He used clay from this earth. God was Adam's Father and the Earth was his Mother. Dust to dust simply means we came from dust and we will return to dust. Several times in the first 4 books of the New Testament Jesus made the statement we were to honor our Father and Mother. Most people take that to mean Mom and Dad but it doesn't. In one place in the first 4 books of the New Testament Jesus also made the statement that we were to call no man on this earth "Father". We have only one father and that is God in Heaven. Jesus would not tell us to not do something and then turn around and do it himself. Therefore He was not talking about Mom and Dad when he said Father and Mother. He was talking about God and Mother earth. That is the Father and Mother we are supposed to be Honoring.

Very wrong concept arkie. God is really who made us therefore He is our Father. But the earth in which we are made was just God's "instrument in making us." When we continue to believe in this lind of thinking, we would be going back to the ancient worship of Mother earth -- into pantheism and paganism. We have been redeemed by God through the blood of Jesus Christ from this useless worship, why are we going back to this worthless pagan worship?

I think there's nothing wrong calling earth as mother earth. It's just a name isn't it?
Caring for the environment would be a great idea and has nothing to do with being a Christian. These are two things that has a separate function so don't go too deep with this one levite.

Yes earth is almost to equal to mother. Mother will safeguard us in her womb for nine months only. Rest of the life span it is earth which takes care of us, hence the mother earth.

Calling earth, Mother Earth is worshiping her. The Earth was created by God and we are to worship the Creator, not the creature or what the creatures reside on, that is, we must not worship man, nor the earth. Those so called Christians who call the earth, "Mother Earth" are blaspheming God and partaking in idolatry. And we should not participate in the green movement. We should be thrifty, and not wasteful, because God has given man the mandate to care for the earth.
And if the green movement makes the price of fruits and vegetables higher, and the cost of fuel and travel higher so that one cannot give as much as they would like to the furthering of God's Kingdom here on Earth, then that is wrong.

It used to be that the Christians were the ones who were considered as caring for the earth as we were giving the mandate from our creator, but what happened is now the pagans and the humanists took over with their worship of mother earth, the goddess, etc. and these snear at us, thinking that we Christians are wasteful. I think the time is for us to let people know that we care for the earth as God intended to but not at the expense of the human population. After all, we would not suggest getting rid of people to make the ground more productive.
And thanks for the best response.

You really got my point here suspenseful. But I think some Christians are just uninformed about it. They are not educated about this truth. We must really separate the Creator from His creations including the earth. And we can care for the earth in our own little way and not participate in green politics. Thanks for sharing.

Native American think of Earth as Mother Earth whether or not they are Christan. It has to do with respect of what is taking care of you (we get all of you needs from Mother Earth and not from outer space. We do not won Mother Earth but rather are passengers on this great planet. The native Americans did not believe in "owning land but it was to be shared by all people, it was not until White man came over to take away almost everything from the Native Americans that land was thought to be "owned" by anyone. So Mother Earth is not a Christian thing or does not belong to any one religion or non religious group but many people think of this great planet as Mother Earth.

Oscarbartoni,
You are exactly correct. It isn't a "Green Thing" or a "New age thing". It is simply giving credit where it is due. God designed this earth to provide everything man could possible need. Everything we have is provided for us by Mother Earth exactly the way God intended. I think Mother Earth deserves our respect and I certainly don't believe God approves of it when we abuse his gift to all man kind. I believe it is very much Christian to refer to this earth as Mother Earth.
