Drawing manga |
|
I have trouble doing this because I can't make the 8 head stick figure drawings. It's confusing and driving me mad (mad scientist mwhaha..'cough'). Can any of you give me some advice to make this easier on little poor me? My drawings turn out wrong and disfigured if I try to make original characters, but it doesn't if I'm looking at a picture. Not good enough. So help me out.

1. sunnysmiles (642) | 5 months ago | When one of my sons was 'into' all things Manga he used to ask me for help and I was useless to say the least. However, he did find a couple of oline sites helpful as they had tutorials as well as tips. Maybe they could help you? They are howtodrawmanga.com and mangatutorials.com.

That said if you want to be drawing people, cartoon or otherwise, you need to understand anatomy. Not just anatomy, but also clothe because a figure will always look off is there aren't any folds, or if the folds are going in the wrong direction, or if there are too many. Really there are a lot of things, as an artist, that you need to be aware of.
Now I've seen the 'How to Draw Manga' series and other books of that ilk and have always been disappointed with the lack of aesthetics in the artwork. If you are going to use them, and I'm not say you shouldn't because even if the art isn't visually appealing it still tends to be accurate, but if you do try and use a few books on realism as well.
One method of drawing that you'll learn in traditional art is termed 'gesture' drawing. Very useful if you find your characters looking stiff. I advise learning how to use gesture and then practice with it. And that would be one of the most important things. Practice, practice and practice some more. If you want to become better you must never stop doing that.
I've been where you are. Sometimes I feel like I still am. All I can say is never give up and never limit yourself. Try everything and somewhere along the way you'll find what works for you. Good luck.

troublesome (135) | 5 months ago | This is some very sound advice. Just like you mentioned, my characters sometimes look so stiff, and boring with no life in it. I'll look up traditional art and gestures and hopefully my drawings will improve. I also have problems with the anatomy and I think I should study that more too. I appreciate your advice and I will take heed. Thank you.
