If you are a gamer then, you have to put some things in mind, the most basic thing to consider when buying a computer meant for gaming is,

(1) The type of Processer
I would recomend an AMD 64 Bit and it should be Dou and above i am not so sure if Amd have a quard core yet but you can do a research before buying one. Any thing beyond 1.8 MHz duo would work for me coz the speed would handle most of the current games in the market currently.

(2)The RAM
This is another impornant factor to consider its very vital, i recomend istalling a higher RAM because games demand too much of it when gaming, i would recomend anything above 2GB of ram.

(3) Video Ram and the video type
This is the skeleton of gaming without a good graphics card you will not enjoy most of the games available in the market today please choose wisely because their are quite a number of graphics card available in the market. But Most people prefer Gforce for gaming with atleast One (1) Gb of Ram

other things you might base are the Cache, Hardisk size, etc, etc

Check Alienware.com for the latest specifications on gaming PCs and laptops. Although their PCs and laptops are pretty expensive, it gives you a fair idea of what the market is giving right now. If you want to but a cheaper one I'd suggest you read a few magazines such as PC WORLD etc for latest categorized specification of PCs and Laptops.

Pentium 4 3.2 GHz
AMD motherboard
4GB RAM
1TB hard disk
DVD RW
Gaming keyboard + Mouse from logitech
noise control headphones
17" LCD monitor

ATI Radeon series graphics cards, or any graphics card with atleast 384MB memory. Do not go for Intel graphics cards. Choose between AMD and Nvidia.

this is the alienware i recommend its pricy but it wont need to be replaced for a long time and it meets the demands for not only todays games but also future game generations id figure it would be a few years before this system even draws near being outdated so what you spend now will save you from having to buy possibly four replacements of the lower performance models on an average basis (of coarse the lower systems run real good too but ive always been the kind of person who enjoys the best things in life ^^)

processor: intel core i7 (had some addon which made it better than the standard i7)
ram: 24 gb (seriously ive never seen 1 with 24 gb last time i customized an alienware it maxed out at 16 gb so apparently they upgrade the systems fast)
hdd: dual 2 tb hdds
optical drive: bluerat/dvd/cd all rw plus a second drive which was dvd/cd+rw with lightscribe, graphics card was a top of the line ati
sound card was also top of the line just go to the site, find thier alx model and click on thier customise option then you will see that these specs are no lie ^^

you can try the following spes. its extremely good.
Intel core quad q8200
4 gb ram
intel DG35ec motherboard.
NVidia 8600 gt 512 mb or ati radon hd4850.
500 gb hard disk

These make up a very good computer at a very affordable price.

If you are planning to buy an amd processor then make sure that you have sufficient cooling in your environment. I know people whose pc just reached temperatures of around 80 degrees celcius and had faced problems.
