Audiobooks - not the real thing or good enough | | I recently rediscovered audiobooks for myself and currently am "working" on The Hobbit, a book I have read as a kid, but hardly remember what it was about now. But the reading is good (though it would be better, if the reader wouldn't sing the songs)
So what is your take on audiobooks? Is it like cheating on reading or another way to "consume" a book?

My mother in law also loves them - she is a poor sleeper and uses them to nod off to, so as not to keep her husband awake she listens to them through headphones.
Personally as I have a vivid imagination I feel that an audiobook would spoil the story for me, as I like to imagine how someone sounds not have it put in front of me.

Someone in the family generally brings some and we all listen to the books on the road. Other times I'll bring my own that I checkout from the library. It works better than a book when it's too dark to read and others are trying to sleep. That said I have heard one or two books that were simply awful and a few that were really very good.
