Well, here we are, starting something about amateur radio. What's your bag in HAM land? I like to try and score a chat with an astronaut while they fly overhead at great speed. 4 conversations so far. I also like the Monday night chatter on the local frequencies here in Melbourne Australia. VHF is my freq. band at the moment. I enjoy getting down to the local radio club on a Friday, but have been a slackie for a couple of months. I also enjoy playing with experimental antenna designs, which, by the way, is why I am stuck on VHF, I blew the UHF finals when the test antenna dropped of the end of the coax. arrrgghh.

CQ, CQ, CQ, de AD5KN.

Can't believe no one has answered an Amateur radio post. Do you suppose we are the only 2 here at MyLot?

myLot reputation of 52/100. VKXY62 (951)  4 years ago

G'day AD5KN de VK3UKF,

It's hard to imagine, but you could be right. Things are just starting up here maybe, and the rest of them are a bit slow to catch on, or they are using an alias alias. My secret Earth population portfolio, tells me the you are George and are probably a baby boomer, (he he), and, aarrrgghhh! exist at this moment somewhere in darkest Arkansas. How do you do it.

Seriously, very nice to meet you George, if you're ever heading down to Oz, drop in and say G'day.

Don't tornadoes grow in Arkansas?

Tell me off your involvement in HAM land mate. What's your band? Do you hog your radio?, or just every now and then, blow off the cobwebs.

Thanks for the flag wave.

I'm not alone in here.

myLot reputation of 41/100. redyellowblackdog (3989)  4 years ago

That's right, I do exist in darkest Arkansas. Did you read the article in which I used the phrase " darkest Arkansas "? Are you familar with my work or did you just google that up?

As to Ham radio, I'm afraid I am only on 2 meters at the moment. I use to work putting up towers so I have 4 here from 30 feet to 115 feet. A darn shame I am not back on HF SSB. I use to get into VK land easily on the large tower.

Hi George, I am Kevin by the way, (rude of me, sorry). I did google you, and saw the 'Darkest Arkansas' comment on qsl.net on your qsl card. I have not read the article you mention, I'd appreciate a link, so I could have a 'Captain Cook' (Look). I did see the repeater shack construction page, and near fell off my chair laughing when I saw the 'final touches' to the the building. The quarter moon on the door was a definite must have. I see you listed on a few international contact lists. I am guessing these are due to your HF transmissions. Your antenna towers would be something I would love to put up, but I find myself again in suburbia. I spent years in the country and did have a couple of high sky hooks up. I am also only on 2 metres at the moment. I blew the guts right out of my UHF final when I was experimenting with a flat disk antenna, (nothing wrong with its design) it fell of the end of the coax when I was transmitting and didn't notice the SWR go into orbit. I never used to have a worry about heights, but I do now, must be getting old. Did a couple of parachute jumps just to see what it was like. I also used to work in mine shafts. Climbing up and down the timber shoring doing electrical work, ore bucket location limit switches and changing fluoros. I also worked on the face with a jackhammer. Ha ha, just remembering, I dropped an ore bucket down the shaft one day, I had to get it out and fix the mess, argh. At the mines I enjoyed cooking the meals and driving the hoist winch the best.

Hi Mugzy528, thanks my friend for your comments, the ticket takes a while to get but is really common sense, you will pass with flying colours. I hope to hear your transmissions relayed via spacecraft some day, cheers, Kevin.

myLot reputation of 52/100. VKXY62 (951)  1 year ago

Hi BG4XOV,

thank you for saying hello.

The 7, 10 and 11 meter bands are very good for skip, or long range.
I imagine you have had many contacts with overseas friends with the equipment you are using.

I really like VHF and UHF as the antennae are smaller and easier to make.

I also experimented with new designs for UHF, I came up with 1 new design.
I called it a dinner plate antenna.

Congratulations for becoming a radio operator while you are still young.

You should do well with your life.

Good luck with your studies in the future.
