Do you drug test your teens?  email this discussion to a friend?

Do any of you drug test your teens or pose the threat of a drug test upon them coming home from a night out with friends? I have the perfect comprehensive drug test kit from NewMed Diagnostics. It comes with a urine test that picks up 10 of the most common drugs among teens incluing; marijuana, pcp, opiates, cocaine, meth, amphetamines, heroin, etc. The kit also has a test for nicotine in case you are concerned about them smoking or chewing tobacco. There is an alcohol test in the box as well that picks up the presence of alcohol in the saliva. The kit is very comprehensive and comes complete with a parent teen family pledge and additional drug abuse literature. I keep my kit on top of my fridge so my kids know that there could always be the chance of a test if I wish. I try to use this kit as a deterant not as a punishment for the kids. It also gives them a way out with friends who may be peer pressuring them because most of their friends know that I have the kit. So when the kids "Just Say No - my mom may test me when I get home" the others know they are not kidding. If you are interested in one of these kits, they sell for $22.50 on ebay. Just go to NewMed Diagnostics ebay store to get one.

That... is actually pretty scary. Surely you should learn to breed 100% faith in your children without needing to use a'kit' as a threat/deterant. There're other ways of looking for evidence without that. It does sound a handy accessory though, but surely they should have the strength to say 'No' without the 'Because my mum may test me.' They arent really learning to be strong enough to withstand peer pressures, because they are under the pressure of tests and kits at home.
Is a good way of looking for the most important and damaging drugs - but as children age some of the things they face temptations for (such as smoking or alcohol) actually provide learning steps in many lives. The latter, alcohol, being something which can be done when in a safe environment, and be quite enjoyable. The kids may appreciate having a test around now, but when they come into their own minds and (as all teenagers naturally do) question authority - it may become something that causes arguments about trust, privacy and growing up. Its going to take a firmer understanding between parent and child to cover those bases once they hit 17-20 when the threat of a test tends to diminish in... well threat.
