what about the sony or canon camera?  

We went through this earlier this year. First I would read some product reviews. I am not sure where to look for these on line but maybe you could put into Google search something like "digital camera product reviews." Consider many brands before making your wish list, not just sony or cannon.

I would also determine what you will use the camera for and your budget. There are so many functions for digital cameras and your needs may be smaller or larger than the average camera on the market. I do like to buy a little above the minimum technology in any area of electronics so that I am not stuck with a dinosaur piece of equipment very quickly. I do not like to buy something that has maximum technology unless absolutely necessary. Many times maximum technology items come down in price in a short period of time as all the technology companies catch up to the new technology and start offering competitive pricing. This is why I try to pick a middle ground that suits my needs as closely as possible.

Once you have a list of the possible cameras that you think will serve your purposes and fit in your budget, it is time to try out the merchandise. I look for local stores in my area that carry the brands I am interested in and then ask the store clerk to let me see the item and use it there in the store. I ask the clerk if they have an opinion on any of the items I have picked or what they see the general public buying. We thought we liked one type of camera and then found that some of the functions were really not suited to what we were used to. We took the camera back for a refund and ended up buying another brand. Make sure that no matter where you buy the camera, it can be returned.

You can't say it like that.. like "which brand is better". As the person above mentioned, the budget and class of the cam required is very important. Whether you are looking for a professional/semi professional cam. I'm inexperienced in terms of buying a professional cam.. but I can clearly say that Canon has the advantage over Sony for a home use cam. If you are not intending to go after professional photography go for Canon, its worth the money we spend.. morover they hav a wide range to select from including ultra slim light weight models. I like use canon

What kind of camera are you considering? Is it digital compact camera or DSLR? If it's a digital compact, sony will be a good choice as the picture quality is sharp and clear. But if for DSLR, canon will obviously be a better one as they really produce great DSLR with great lenses.

I suggest to opt for cannon when compared with sony. It has a good image quality i have personally noticed it.
The experience that i have with this camera is that whenever we zoom more, till the possible extent the image quality does not go blurred it will be sharp and correct and never degrades with its quality.

Sony also is good but when i had an experience with cannon i am gone crazy for the cannon camera. Will surely purchase it in coming days.
