Remote Control Helicopters! Have you ever had one of these?

I guess I love to experiment with trying something new from time to time and so I went through a phase of being interested in remote control helicopters! Most people would probably think that this is an expensive hobby to get involved with and it can be if you go for a top of the range remote control helicopter! However, this did not put me off and I purchased a tiny helicopter that sat comfortably in the palm of my hand! It didn't cost much and I really started to have some fun with it. Initially I started flying it inside my flat but I kept on crashing it into the walls, it didn't break though surprisingly, it was made of rubber foam, perhaps you've seen them! Anyway, it was meant for indoor flying but foolishly I took it to my local park, the wind caught it and I lost it in mid air, it was taken by the wind faster than I could run and that was that! I did have fun with it though and I may return to this hobby once more but I have given it up for a short spell. So, have you ever had one of these models? Perhaps you've really splashed out on a high tech machine? I would love to fly but I thought that this was probably the closest I would get to the real thing! Andrew

I used to live in a house that backed onto a school oval and every weekend, people used to come and fly remote control airplanes and helicopters there. They'd use the cricket pitch as a runway! I was always fascinated by the helicopters especially and some of them were unbelievably detailed! They ranged in size too and the biggest One I saw was at least a foot and a half long. They sure were noisy though! I think it would be a lot of fun, but it would also be quite an expensive hobby. Apart from those pull string helicopters that take off from a small handheld unit, I've never owned one myself.

Hi James! That's amazing! Two responses so far on this discussion, this can't be as good as the ones I created over the weekend! Well, there's also a field nearby me and you can constantly hear the buzzing sound of remote control aircraft flying about. Whilst I was flying my mini helicopter I did have a lot of fun with it. I want to experience that again I think. Nice to hear from you James. Andrew

Hi Andrew. Are you talking about the micro helicopters? If so, I had a couple of havoc ones before. My husband had wanted them for the kids (or was it for us? LOL) Those things were really easy and fun to fly.
Anyway, they apparently got broken by our oldest son so we don't have them anymore. No need to worry though, my husband has been into R/C for some years now and has had planes, heli's, and even a boat. We even have a flight simulator so we can practice up on our skills without destroying the real thing. LOL
Your story reminds me of one that happened to a nephew of mine when he was growing up. Though it's a little different as it was a plane, instead of a helicopter. He had gotten a little battery powered plane, if I remember right. My husband wound it up really good, maybe a little too good LOL, and off it went higher and higher into the sky. It ended up catching a thermal and disappeared. Our nephew was so disappointed. Poor guy had paid for it himself from some birthday money, I think. My husband thought it was totally worth it though. He had never seen something like that fly so high! LOL
Happy mylotting!

Yes, those are the ones! It's great to communicate with someone that is into remote control helicopters in a big way! I just love the whole flying thing and would love to fly for real at some point. I'm looking into the idea of taking a microlight trial flight and then hopefully take it up seriously as a hobby. There's a terrific website that I like to check out from time to time and it is www.xheli.com They have a lot of good machines on this website and I may make a purchase at some point. Andrew

Hello andrew, ever since we were young children that was already my wished to have one day a remote controlled helicopter. Now that we're already matured my interest of having it are already gone. Besides it would not be most likely good to see a matured man playing like a little boy...he he he he

Oh I just loved acting the kid when I was flying my mini helicopter! Those days are over for now anyhow. It's a nice hobby to have if you can afford it I think. Andrew

Even though this is an older discussion, it caught my eye and I had to respond.
Decades ago, when my son was young, we got him remote control everything. It was a blast for mom and dad as well as the kid!
And funny thing... I now live in a rural area; there's a field I look at through my windows in my office; the next neighbors over are out there evenings and weekends with their remote control choppers and planes. It always makes me smile with memories of the past!
