My best friend knows I am there for her when she needs me, we are several hundred miles apart, but I would answer the phone if she called. But the thing about my best friend is she makes bad choices in her life and brings most of her pain on herself. That does not stop me from being there when she needs me. It also does not stop me from later calling her and talking to her about how the problem she was so upset about came to be. I am honest and she would say sometimes brutal about some things in her life. I am there for all of my friends and family and will do anything within my power to help them or be there for them. It is not always possible and sometimes priorities have to be put in place for evryone to be able to function 24/7. There are times when I am so involved with my own pain that I have problems dealing with others, but the important people in my life understand me and my arthritis problems well enough to be able to understand when I am not available.

If my best friend called in the middle of the night I would have no choice but to talk to her on the phone; we live almost 2000 miles apart. But any of my other close friends, I'd probably tell them to meet my somewhere where we could sit and talk over a cup of coffee. I've never been one to turn my back on a friend, even in the middle of the night.
