Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osborne.....  email this discussion to a friend?

lynettestarr (21)   ranked 1,684 out of 2,052 in music lover 3 years ago

My son recently started listening to the old Black Sabbath music and Ozzy Osborne. Can someone tell me if I should be worried? I mean, just the name of the band is enough to worry me, and I don't like to go by looks, but c'mon...Ozzy looks scary. I've heard how he talks and his vocabulary was and is very limited, it seems (to vulgar language and etc.). What DOES the name Black Sabbath imply? Did they come by it in some particular way or it was just to sound as rebellious as they possibly could?

The band apparently changed their name from Earth to Black Sabbath when they began incorporating occult- and horror-inspired lyrics.

I don't think you need to be particularly worried. Many kids go through a phase of liking what seems to be inappropriate music but it actually seems to do most of them little harm. It's part of growing up and usually a way of 'keeping in' with their peers. The lyrics have less influence, usually, than you might suppose (though if you want to know the lyrics, you can very easily find them on the Internet. Here is just one of many sites (the first that came up in Google when I searched "Black Sabbath lyrics"): http://www.azlyrics.com/b/blacksabbath.html

If you are worried that all he is listening to is Black Sabbath, try to encourage an interest in (and intelligent comparison with) other bands. It's probably best not to try to actively ban him from listening to any band or to express TOO much disapproval of the band or it's lyrics. Your opinion is probably best aired gently and with understanding, or it may be flatly ignored!

MyLot has recently taken to occasionally messing up URLs. I suspect they are trying to discourage people from posting referral links but something isn't working quite properly!

The site I meant to give the link to is: http://www.azlyrics.com/b/blacksabbath.html

The word "If", which belongs to the sentence following it, seems to have got incorporated into the link (which means it probably won't work!)

It's done it again ... and I purposely put it on its own line, too!

Thanks for the link! I feel better, hearing that not all is lost if a kid listens to Ozzy and Black Sabbath! lol I was worried that it was the start of a new trend with him. Maybe in a way, it is, but it doesn't mean he's going to go crazy on me. Thanks so much for your input.
Interesting about their name change. What a change, huh?

It's a band I wouldn't personally want to listen to much, though, I believe that, musically, they have something going for them.

The important thing with teens is to see that they have many varied interests, as I'm sure yours does!

No, don't get worried . Sure, they have some pretty racy lyrics, but so does modern Rap/Hip-Hop, & it's probably just a phase he's going through . I personally love Ozzy, although i was never into Black Sabbath . Keep an eye on his behavior, but if it's just him listening to this music, it's cool .

Thanks! Funny thing is, he's like me in that he likes all kinds of music. His favorite is country! Imagine that. He also likes old time gospel music and bought Alan Jackson's CD with all the old gospel songs on it that Alan recorded for his Mother. I think I admitted that I do like a few of the old songs...Crazy Train, Iron Man (I change the lyrics when I sing along....to Iron Mom...lol), etc. The reason I have a little concern about it is that my son is basically a loner. Kids have to come to him to make friends, he won't go to them. He's too quiet. You know what they say, the quiet ones are the ones to watch.
Thanks for your input. I know you're right.

Hi!
I am into Black Sabbath since I was a kid. There's nothing you have to worry about, this is not a sect (anything about religion at all). You have maybe heard about Ozzy and Sabbath's satanic influence and such things but c'mon :) It's just music after all! They started their career during the late 60s. Black Sabbath's music is influenced by The Beatles and the new born psychedelic rock. Yes, you may associate this with drugs and alcohol . . . But I'm a huge Sabbath fan and I've never been interested in drugs . . . Not at all! And, please believe me, I'm sure that 99% of the fans are not into drugs!
What about the scary look? You know, this make-up, long hair and stuff... Hah, it's nothing more than a style. We all want to be different in our own way, isn't it? It's not that bad to look a little scary sometimes :)
You don't have to worry at all!
